CUNY City College (CCNY), located in a compact 35 acres within Manhattan, New York City, stands out from the crowd of similar schools by making strident efforts to provide an affordable education to its 13,000 undergraduates and 3,000 graduate students. Given its mid-1800’s beginnings as a free college that admitted applicants on academic merit alone, it should come as no surprise that even today, freshmen can attend CCNY for less than $7,000 in tuition and fees per year. But that tiny sum in no way implies a dearth of opportunity: coursework offerings here span over 130 disciplines within 10 collegiate divisions, such as the Grove School of Engineering and the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership. Further, CCNY competitors enjoy vying for the annual CUN Athletic Conference Championship in over 20 sports, and a bevy of over 200 student-run organizations include a Middle-Eastern dance group, fencing and sci-fi clubs, and plenty of cultural clubs designed to help students connect with those of similar heritage. CCNY even counts among its ranks of alumni four laureates of the Nobel Prize in Physics! If you’re an urbanite at heart and take your education seriously, it’s hard to beat CUNY City College when it comes to value and quality.
