Established in 1890, Henderson State University is a public liberal arts university located in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. HSU was initially a private college called Arkadelphia Methodist College, and after becoming a public institution around the 1920s, the university expanded at a rapid pace, quickly gaining a reputable name and prestige. Notable alumni include Billy Bob Thornton, Bobby Bones, Sid McMath, and Sean McGrath, among several others. It is a medium sized university, with about 4000 students enrolled annually. The college offers certificate, associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in a variety of disciplines – communications, clinical mental health counselling, and political science to name a few. Student services at Hsu include academic counselling, tutoring, and career counselling & preparation. Student activities are aplenty – clubs & organisations catering to various interests and hobbies, sports & athletics, and intramurals. The Battle of the Ravine, a rivalry game between HSU & Ouachita Baptist University, holds the distinction of being the oldest rivalry of any of the NCAA Division II institutions. With traditions such as the Showband of Arkansas, and That Old Reddie Spirit, the school spirit at HSU is tangible!
