From its beginnings as part of the Lamar University system set up in the 1970’s by the Texas legislature, Lamar State College at Orange has evolved to stand on its own, enrolling about 2,300 students each year. It purposely maintains a careful balance between focusing on academic transfer degrees and offering a variety of vocational curricula; majors of study here include sociology, natural sciences, pharmacy technology and even upward-mobility nursing, among many more. For those not pursuing degrees, a unique “leisure learning” division encompasses aerobics, photography, computer courses and courses tailored specifically for senior citizens. LSC-O also uses the Desire2Learn platform to offer distance-education courses that can be logged into anytime, from anywhere. A full-service counseling department can help anyone get connected with summer employment or with key data regarding job prospects. And over a dozen on-campus organizations keep students active outside the classroom, too; from the Diversity Society and quiz bowl team to Teachers of Tomorrow and a local chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa honors society, there’s always something to be a part of here! Lamar State College—Orange: a portal to a more knowledgeable, prepared mind.
