Sam Houston State University, founded in 1879, is a public university located amidst the hills, lake and forestland of Huntsville, Texas. It is a member of the Texas State University system, and home to over 16,800 undergraduates. It echoes the true blue (red?) Texan spirit with its oak-tree-lined main campuses’ rodeo arena! The Blatchley Bell Tower and Clock is a familiar sight surrounding the mall area, and its fountain turns heads. Star or planet gazing is never out of the question, with the opportunity to frequent the school’s planetarium and observatory. For those seeking quieter pastures, it also accommodates an 18-hole golf course called the Raven’s Nest. SHSU Bearkats bleed orange and white, watching their top-ranked football team play. Club sports are just as popular, with its quidditch, ultimate frisbee, martial arts and inline hockey teams! Notable alumni include Rhett Bomar, former USA football player and Thaksin Shinawatra, former Thai prime minister. The university, with its winning campus life and spirited locale, is a great place to gain a well-rounded education.
