University of Southern Mississippi, established in 1910, is a public research university located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It has over 14,800 undergraduates, and is distinguished for its high research activity & fine arts program. It has nearly 300 student organizations, which include Greek life, religious, community service and academic clubs & organizations. It has close ties with the nearby city of New Orleans, granting its students a two-day break for Mardi Gras. The Golden Eagles also cheer on its football and baseball team; contributing greatly to the black-and-gold pride!
