How I Got A Tech Job At A Global Asset Management Firm

Recently, we teamed up with three former OppenheimerFunds interns who landed full-time jobs with the global asset management firm. Today’s post is from Bryan Dominguez who graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Industrial and Labor Relations. Now, he’s working for the HR Technology department in OppenheimerFunds’ New York City office.

My internship was part of a co-op like program with the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations. I started interning with Oppenheimerfunds during the spring semester of junior year. The internship led to a summer extension, and that’s where I really began to see the potential of working at OppenheimerFunds full-time.

The level of collaboration and passion conveyed by the employees at Oppenheimerfunds really inspired me to challenge myself. In school, I looked deeply into how employees work and what factors bring out successful organizations. Not only are people performing and executing at the highest level, but they are the most down-to-earth and humble individuals you’ll ever meet.

From Intern to Full-Time Employee

As an intern with almost 8 months of experience working at OppenheimerFunds, I found the transition to full-time to be seamless. Of course, with any change, there is a bit of an adapting phase, but OppenheimerFunds does a wonderful job preparing their interns for that real-world working experience.

During my internship, my colleagues valued my opinion and provided me with meaningful work that impacted a wide array of stakeholders. To be placed in a position where decisions have a ripple effect encouraged me to accept challenges and think quickly on my feet. Because of the dynamic nature of the work, I truly believe that the internship program at Oppenheimerfunds prepared me to take on a full-time opportunity here or anywhere.

My Advice for Turning an Internship Into a Career

The greatest advice I received as an intern was to take every task or assignment and make it your own. When you’re an intern, you want to provide your team with the type of work that’s undeniably yours. The power of your brand as an individual is what differentiates your candidacy for the full-time role. When you’re given an internship opportunity here, it means the company sees your potential. You have a chance to really show people what you are made of.
