The Power of a First Impression

How many times have you made a judgment of someone in the first few seconds of meeting them? Whether it be good, bad or neutral.

Im guessing it happens to you on a daily basis..because I know it happens to me everyday.

We all know that first impressions are made within seconds of meeting someone for the first time. Whether it be a hiring manager, colleague or even future spouse, it is crucial that you present yourself in the way you want to be remembered.

Do you want to be perceived as Professional? Trustworthy? Detail oriented? Average? Sloppy?  For example, who would you rather hire for a corporate company: A young adult in a suit who is clean-cut and maintains a clean and sophisticated image of themselves, or someone who wore baggy clothing that doesn’t match with unkempt hair?  I would hope you would hire the first person I mentioned.

Most individuals would want to be perceived as professional, trustworthy and detail oriented.  And in order for you to come off as possessing these traits you will want to dress and act accordingly. Remember, you can never redo a first impression so you always want to be dressed professionally.  No one will ever think less of you for wearing a suit.

Put yourselves in the shoes of whoever you are about to meet or have the possibility or meeting.  If you were the hiring manager, how would you want your new employee to dress, act and hold themselves when representing your company.

You always want to put your best foot forward when meeting someone new and remember you never know who you will run into…maybe its a business owner that is looking for a new employee or its the CEO of the company you had an interview at.

The takeaway from this is that you can control how people perceive you and the most important time to do this is during the first impression.

When you meet someone do you come off as:

  • Flashy and cocky

  • Professional and detail oriented

  • Average and lacking personality

  • Sloppy and lacking a professional image
