What Your Sleep Position Says About Who You Are at Work

Sleep in the fetal position? Hog all of the sheets? Wake up not knowing why your feet are on the pillows? Your sleep position at night isn’t entirely random, and it actually says a lot about not just who you are as a person but also who you are as an employee.

Just how accurate is the correlation between how you sleep and how you work? See for yourself.

The Starfish “Takes Up the Entire Bed” Position

Let’s face it: You want to do all the things all the time. For you, figuring out your career path will come down to finding companies that’ll give you freedom: Working at a startup, where you’ll be able to have your hands in many buckets, is where you’ll thrive.

One important thing, though: Being a “yes man” or “yes woman” means that sometimes you’ll have to check yourself and learn how to delegate.

The “Only Takes Up the Edge of the Bed” Position

You like to compartmentalize and know exactly what your roles and responsibilities will be. Handling fast pacing and big changes might not be your strong suit, but that doesn’t mean that your strong work ethic and commitment to process aren’t huge bonuses for any team.

The Blanket Hoarder Position

Wake up with a pile of sheets and blankets on top of you? Congrats, you’re officially a blanket hoarder. What does this say about what drives you professionally? It means you like receiving recognition and always being top of mind for others. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing; in fact, being driven by a desire to get the gold star actually makes you a fierce employee.

What kinds of career paths are for you? Try something where people with a competitive nature thrive, like sales (or even the high-stakes world of investment banking).

The Fetal Position

No matter what happens at work, you like to protect yourself and always look out for your own well-being. In high-pressure situations, you know to look inward, and you’ll always find ways to shy away from conflict and stay focused at the task at hand.

The “Kicks the Blanket Off the Bed” Position

You’re a giver. You like helping others and allowing them to achieve your goals, even if that means you have to sacrifice some things (like warmth on a cold night) on your end in the process. Regardless of the career path you go into, you’re going to be a stellar manager.

The Diagonal Sleeper Position

Being a diagonal sleeper takes a lot of creativity on your part (seriously, how does your head end up in one corner and your feet on the other?), so you’re going to thrive in careers where your imagination and originality will be celebrated.

There’s no need to break out the paintbrush and live your life as a starving artist though; even just finding a role where you can let your creativity shine (like advertising or marketing) will suffice.

The “Sleep Like a Rock” Position

You’re the clutch person that other people can turn to, and you relish in being able to come through when people need you the most; in fact, you get an adrenaline rush from it.

Regardless of how you sleep at night, the important thing is that you get some sleep.
