That\u2019s a stark difference\nfrom 1950, when it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/wb\/stats\/newstats\/facts\/women_lf.htm#CivilianLFSex\">less than a third<\/a>. And that\u2019s not all that has\nchanged: <a href=\"https:\/\/collegepuzzle.stanford.edu\/women-earn-more-degrees-than-men-gap-keeps-increasing\/\">Since\n1982,<\/a> women have earned more bachelor\u2019s degrees than men, in recent years\nby as much as 7 percent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this wave hasn\u2019t yet reached the\nleadership level. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalyst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/missing_pieces_report_01152019_final.pdf\">15.7 percent<\/a> of board member seats at Fortune\n500 companies were held by women in 2018. And in recent years, only <a href=\"https:\/\/corpgov.law.harvard.edu\/2018\/08\/13\/women-in-the-c-suite-the-next-frontier-in-gender-diversity\/\">24 percent<\/a> of director-level roles and <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/infographic\/investing\/female-ceo-leadership\/index.html\">16.5 percent<\/a> of the top executive positions at\nS&amp;P 500 companies were held by women. This problem is especially acute in\nthe science and technology fields, where female representation lags <a href=\"https:\/\/corpgov.law.harvard.edu\/2018\/08\/13\/women-in-the-c-suite-the-next-frontier-in-gender-diversity\/\">far\nbehind<\/a> other sectors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/product\/the-athena-factor-reversing-the-brain-drain-in-science-engineering-and-technology\/10094-PDF-ENG\">a study<\/a> in the Harvard Business Review, a host of factors\u2014including isolation, hostile company cultures, and a lack of executive mentors and sponsors\u2014all contribute to high dropout rates for women at around the 10-year mark of their careers. That, in turn, leads to a lack of women advancing into senior leadership roles in the science, technology, and engineering industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why Leadership Development Programs\nlike the ones at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wayup.com\/organizations\/thermo-fisher-scientific-QLABvJ\/\">Thermo Fisher Scientific<\/a> are so important in\nthe push to help women advance in technology. Why? Well, they provide\nopportunities and support that help overcome each of the factors that\ncontribute to a lack of women in STEM leadership roles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get a better sense of how they accomplish\nthat, we spoke to members of Thermo Fisher\u2019s IT Leadership Development\nProgram\u2014who are all at different stages in their careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thermo Fisher Matches Everyone With A Mentor\u2014And Connects\nThem To Senior Leaders <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s not a secret to anybody that there&#8217;s not\nenough women in technology,\u201d Sarah, a two-year veteran of Thermo Fisher\u2019s IT\nLeadership Development Program, says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can make finding a relatable mentor a\nchallenge\u2014which is a bigger deal than it might initially seem. Consider this:\nSeventy-five percent of executives<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/yec\/2018\/10\/02\/be-one-get-one-the-importance-of-mentorship\/#9a7107874343\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/yec\/2018\/10\/02\/be-one-get-one-the-importance-of-mentorship\/#9a7107874343\">say<\/a> that mentorship has been critical to their\ncareer growth and development. Mentors also often serve as sponsors, helping\nyou secure promotions and opportunities during your time at a company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a member of a Thermo Fisher LDP, you\u2019re\nconnected to senior leaders through events and given access to a mentor through\nthe company\u2019s formal mentorship program. This has been a serious advantage to\npeople like Sarah, who had the confidence of knowing she had someone to both\nguide her and promote her at Thermo Fisher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This same network of mentors and leaders also\nhelped connect her to other women in the company\u2014which helps to prevent the\nfeeling of isolation that HBR identified as one of the key \u201cdropout\u201d factors\nfor women at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve been lucky enough where the program\nconnected me with higher-up women in technology who will mentor me and teach me\nabout what their experiences were\u2014as well as connect me with peers,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Networks Of Leaders And Learners Help Women Shape The Company\nCulture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These networks that Sarah and her peers were\nable to tap in to are both formal and informal at Thermo Fisher. One example of\na more formalized network is the Women\u2019s Employee Resource Group, which\nconnects Thermo Fisher professionals from across fields for networking events,\nLunch and Learns, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was Sophia\u2019s experience. She\u2019s a former\nThermo Fisher intern and Class of 2019 graduate who will be returning in the\nfall for Thermo Fisher\u2019s IT LDP. \u201cI went with my boss and my mentor. We had\nlunch and listened to somebody speak,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Women\u2019s ERG drives conversations\u2014like the\none Sophia and her mentor participated in\u2014that help shape the company culture.\nBy speaking to the experience of women at the company in a setting that\nincludes both men and women, they help to create awareness and understanding\nand prevent non-inclusive cultures from forming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learn Real Leadership Skills\u2014From Real Leaders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This kind of networking is so effective in\nlarge part because everyone is so willing to support the LDP members. And\nthat\u2019s no accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you introduce yourself as an LDP, it&#8217;s\nlike, &#8216;Oh, okay, you&#8217;re a high potential person.&#8217; People like to foster you and\nmentor you,\u201d explains Alexa, who graduated from the IT LDP and became a\nMarketing Manager on one of Thermo Fisher\u2019s e-commerce teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless, something that many talented\ntechies struggle with is developing non-technical skills, especially those\nfoundational soft skills that great leaders are made of. That\u2019s where mentors\nand managers were especially helpful in the LDP, as was the case for Alexa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was soft skills, she says. This serves the\ndual purpose of teaching the skills required of leaders\u2014clear communication,\nsetting meetings with senior leaders, etc.\u2014while also preparing them to find\ntheir next role after the two-year rotational program comes to a close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe program really focuses on networking\nbecause that&#8217;s how you get your post-program role,\u201d Alexa says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo matter which LDP you participate in, you\nwill have visibility throughout the company to take your next step,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This visibility makes finding your next job at\nthe company much more of an opportunity than a challenge. While it might sound\nlike a lot of pressure, that freedom to explore new departments and forge your\nown path is actually one of the best parts of the rotational LDP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt gives you the gift of seeing if what you\nthink you like is actually what you like,\u201d Sarah says. \u201cI think one of the most\namazing things about this program is while you&#8217;re gaining this growth and\nlearning, it&#8217;s giving you the gift of exploration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thermo Fisher\u2019s IT Leadership Development Program\naims to address the universal factors that hold women back in the tech\nindustry\u2014and the needs of each individual participant.
