Otherwise you\u2019re not getting the job done.<\/p>\n<p>This means you\u2019re basically making two sales at the same time. To pull that off, you need equal parts intelligence and social grace. That\u2019s why social butterflies with a knack for making compelling arguments will find themselves uniquely prepared for this role.<\/p>\n<p>Weickgenannt agrees. \u201cThe best candidates are well-rounded and have very strong interpersonal skills,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Multitasking And Quick Thinking<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Recruiting is incredibly multifaceted, which means you need to be, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere really is no average day,\u201d Weickgenannt says. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of variety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That variety includes anything from meeting with candidates and following up on references to strategizing with your team and extending offers. Sometimes it can even mean helping with on-boarding for the candidates who accept the job.<\/p>\n<p>And all the while, you\u2019ve got more positions to fill. If you\u2019re someone who looks at a mountain of tasks and thinks, \u201cI\u2019ve got time for that and maybe a couple of other things, too,\u201d chances are you would thrive as a recruiter.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Leadership Skills<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cLeadership\u201d is one of those vague terms that seems like it simultaneously applies everywhere and nowhere\u2014<em>usually, <\/em>that is.<\/p>\n<p>But when it comes to recruiting, you actually need to <em>lead<\/em> people. It\u2019s like being the president of a club, except your goal is to get everybody in the club the perfect job. That means helping people put forward the best version of themselves and their skill sets\u2014and matching them to positions that you\u2019re tasked with filling. (And then trying do that again and again and again.)<\/p>\n<p>That can be challenging at times. \u201cOur product is people, and people are very unpredictable,\u201d Weickgenannt says.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when the whole leadership thing comes into play. Gifted leaders are inherently more capable of driving people toward a common goal.<\/p>\n<p>Think of it this way. If your candidate or your client can\u2019t get behind your plan, then you\u2019re not effectively doing your job. But if you\u2019re someone people turn to for advice, then you\u2019re probably the kind of person they would trust to get them the right job.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Money Motivation<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>What\u2019s the most rewarding part about recruiting (beyond the satisfaction of helping people better their lives and advance their careers)?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompensation,\u201d says Weickgenannt. \u201cIt\u2019s a very lucrative career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recruiters are incentivized based on job performance. That means the more successful you are, the more money you can make\u2014and the higher you can climb up the corporate ladder.<\/p>\n<p>If this kind of success lights a fire under you, then you\u2019re sure to be excited by a competitive recruiting career.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Flexible Backgrounds<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If you\u2019ve made it this far and you\u2019re thinking, \u201cWell, I\u2019ve got these other skills, but I\u2019m not a business major,\u201d then you\u2019re in luck.<\/p>\n<p>The range of successful recruiters includes people with a ton of different educational backgrounds. \u201cThere\u2019s not one major that we look for,\u201d Weickgenannt says.
