    What you'll do:

    • Responsible for collection, identification and storage of hazardous waste generated in the designated area.
    • Labels all hazardous waste containers in accordance with applicable environmental and safety regulations. (e.g., EPA, OSHA, DOT, etc.)
    • Determines quantities of each waste type for appropriate authorized disposal agent, arranges pick-up times with selected agents, and signs each hazardous waste manifest supplied by an agent.
    • Performs a weekly inventory and audit of each plant's hazardous waste that is scheduled for disposal that week.
    • Maintains a manifest file that is ready for inspection by the applicable governing body.
    • Provides 24 hour on-call support for emergency clean-up of spills.
    • Participates in continuous improvement of cell processes.
    • Cross-trains in other complementary skills and seeks endorsements for those skills as needed to support production requirements.
    • Moves between production assignments that utilize multiple skills endorsements as needed to support production requirements.
    • Participates in cross training of other technicians as needed to support production requirements.
    • Responsible for observing all applicable safety requirements and reporting immediately any unsafe practices/conditions.
    • Model behaviors consistent with good quality, health and safety, and environmental management practices.
    • Ensures hazardous waste storage areas are compliant with regulatory and company EHS requirements, including proper segregation and secondary containment.
    • Conducts weekly inspections of waste accumulation areas and documents findings per regulatory requirements.
    • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations, including RCRA, TSCA, and DOT rules.
    • Maintains spill kits and ensures they are readily accessible and properly stocked.
    • Carries out other duties as assigned.

    Position Requirements:

    • Good planning, organizational, decision making, oral and written communication skills.
    • Thorough knowledge of material safety data sheets and the handling of hazardous materials/chemicals.
    • Knowledge of chemicals used throughout the company.
    • Current certification in the transportation of dangerous goods (TDG).
    • Specialized courses and/or training related to the proper storage and disposal of hazardous waste.
    • Working knowledge of related company instructions, company processes and MSDS labels.
    • Ability to lift over 70 pounds (unassisted) for approximately 25% of the average work day.
    • Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, push and pull for prolonged periods.
    • Knowledge of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) requirements.
    • Ability to don appropriate PPE, including respirators, as required by job duties.
    • Annual fit testing and medical clearance for respiratory protection, if applicable.
    • Familiarity with electronic waste tracking and manifesting systems.

    Background Information:

    The typical minimum level of education to perform this job competently is equivalent to high school completion or equivalent to high school completion with specialized training. The person can read text of medium difficulty requiring an understanding of basic concepts. He/she may be expected to write text intended to communicate non-technical information and, display command of spelling, grammar, punctuation and basic composition. People working at this level can be required to have certain specialized skills, and be able to comprehend somewhat complicated procedures. Completion of 24-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER training preferred or required depending on job location and regulatory jurisdiction.

    Directly/indirectly related work experience representing continuous learning and required for someone to perform this job competently is one to three years.

    Ongoing work assignments typically have clearly defined goals, but no (or minimal) direction with respect to what action steps to follow. The incumbent's education, training, and previous experience will help ensure that the goal of the assignment can be clearly defined and understood (even if that means just knowing what relevant questions to ask), but the required/optional approaches to achieving the goal will often remain unclear, undefined and/or untested until the work assignment is well underway. The role involves work in potentially hazardous environments and includes appropriate risk mitigation measures.
