Job Description Qualifications:
The Boeing Company is looking for a Wind Tunnel Test Engineer to join our team in Berkeley, MO. The TE role is a core competency within the wind tunnel aerodynamic test engineering skill code. Specifically, the TE role works in the St. Louis Aero Test capability within Boeing Test and Evaluation (BT&E) as part of the wind tunnel test engineering team. The Aero Test capability supports wind tunnel tests for all Boeing divisions, including Boeing Commercial Aircraft (BCA) and Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS) programs at Boeing-owned wind tunnels and those external to the company.
The TE fills an integral role within wind tunnel testing as they are the primary personnel in designing, planning, and coordinating the test effort. At least one TE is assigned to each wind tunnel test effort depending on the size of the test. They collaborate with the lead test engineer, the operations team, and the program partners to ensure the test meets the requirements of the business partner in the most effective, efficient, and safe way possible.
The TE must be knowledgeable about aerodynamic concepts and applications, including test techniques and basic wind tunnel facility operation. They must have strong communication skills, an ability to work well within a team, and adapt to changing requirements and situations. A large portion of wind tunnel testing falls in the research and development arena which requires a generous measure of flexibility and a quick response capability. The TE must also have strong documentation skills to ensure proper configuration control and troubleshooting processes are being logged.
The St. Louis Aero Test organization has oversight of the Boeing Polysonic Wind Tunnel (PSWT), but supports testing at wind tunnel facilities throughout the world. The TE will primarily support PSWT; however, the TE will be called upon to support remote test facilities, as required. Travel will be required. Some individual tests can last in excess of 30 days. This role is expected to travel about 25% of the year. Travel can be initiated with little or no notice. TE’s support multiple-shift work schedules depending on test and facility schedules.
BDS is the primary business partner supported by the team, but, as needed, the team supports all business units in the company.
Our teams are currently hiring for a broad range of experience levels including; Entry-Level and Associate Level Wind Tunnel Test Engineers.
Position Responsibilities:
Serve as the primary point of contact for all communication and coordination between the test facility and the test customer
Collect, assemble, and document all test-related details, information and decisions during the entire test planning and execution phases and retain this information as a quality record of the test for future applications
Ensure the operational procedures and measurement techniques being used to conduct the test are adequate to achieve the objectives of the test
Prepare test model hardware and model related instrumentation used during the test, including participation in hardware and instrumentation acceptance testing and buyoff at fabricator/vendor locations
Understand and mitigate hazards and risks to: the health of personnel supporting the test, the facility where the test is being conducted, and the test specific hardware
Gain detailed familiarity and understanding with applicable test hardware to ensure the effectiveness, efficiency and adequacy of hardware assemblies, especially as it applies to ensuring accurate and repeatable hardware configurations while also minimizing model change times during the tunnel occupancy period
