  • Responsibilities

    The Advanced Technology (AT) Analytics Internship provides an opportunity for STEM students to gain hands-on experience working with scientists and engineers in a fast-paced, early-stage scientific research team. The Advanced Technology intern will contribute to various ongoing research projects in the field of spectroscopy analytics and chemometrics. The position is 12 weeks, starting in May or June depending on availability working 40 hours/week.

    Essential Functions

    • Initiate and/or support a variety of research and development projects germane to spectroscopy analytics
    • Perform studies independently, reporting those results to team leadership, and utilizing those results to drive meaningful changes in the company’s digital science pipeline
    • Data mine existing spectroscopic libraries and databases to drive insights
    • Build and test analytical classification or regression models
    • Deploy models using a Docker and a RESTful interface
    • Analyze and summarize large sets of complex data
    • Present data summaries and technical recommendations to R&D leadership, project stakeholders, commercial marketing and product management teams

    Decision-making authority

    • The intern would report directly to the Senior Manager for Advanced Technology in Madison, WI.

    Specific Scope Data

    Specific tasks will be tailored to the intern’s experience and abilities, but may include any of the following:

    • Programming for data analysis, such as Python, MATLAB, R, etc.
    • Programming for application development, such as C#
    • Embedded device experience, such as NVIDIA Jetson, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, etc
    • Spectroscopic data collection and spectral interpretation
    • Classification analysis, such as Logistic Regression, Random Forest, and CNNs
    • Regression analysis, such as Linear Regression or multivariate regression
    • Unsupervised Learning, such as Principal Component Analysis
    • Image analysis, especially for hyperspectral images
    • Chemometric analysis, such as classical least squares or partial least squares

    Skills and Abilities

    • Ability to work both independently as well as a member of a cross-functional team
    • Strong willingness to learn, be mentored and improve
    • Aptitude for hands-on experimentation, prototyping, and tinkering
    • Desire to contribute and improve the design of new and existing spectroscopic analytics tools
    • Ability to present clearly to others about areas of expertise or new results
    • Deep understanding of data analysis techniques
    • Understanding or experience using Amazon Web Services for cloud computing
    • Basic understanding of various spectroscopic techniques
