Primary Function We are currently seeking Engineering Intern for Summer 2019 . This position located in Columbus, Ohio . Battelle's CBRNE Defense business unit is committed to protecting our nation against chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) threats. Applying expertise across the globe, CBRNE Defense employees specialize in CBRNE-related sciences, intelligence, engineering, protection readiness, product design and manufacturing, and logistics. The business unit provides clients with understanding, prediction and assessment of the risks, hazards and threats posed by CBRNE materials and those who would use them nefariously. At the same time, the business unit helps clients prepare for these threats by testing and evaluating defensive equipment and procedures, developing and manufacturing CBRNE defense products and integrating them into fielded systems, and providing training and logistics support across the globe. The Engineering Intern will work in the PLCM Business Line alongside researchers, scientists, engineers, designers, and technicians to develop detector products and integrated systems primarily for US Government and commercial markets. The ideal candidate is proactive, eager to learn, and can view problems analytically and creatively. Although technical competence and critical thinking skills are expected, emphasis is placed on technical problem solving, effectiveness, and flexibility. Major Responsibilities Supporting team members in developing mechanical products, subsystems and/or components Gaining hands-on experience through assembly and testing work in the lab Communicating results and progress using written and oral communication to the project team Participating in other facets of product development such as concept generation, prototyping, analysis, etc. as much as project work load and the candidates abilities allow. Position Requirements Sophomore standing or higher in a B.S. Mechanical or Electrical Engineering curriculum and currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited university Minimum of 3.0 GPA Experience with design, analysis, testing, and fabrication of mechanical and electro-mechanical components and systems. Experience with standard lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, voltmeters, function generators, etc. Experience working in a lab environment, including preparing, conducting, and documenting tests, soldering, and wiring Excellent verbal and written communication skills Demonstrated initiative to be a self-starter with a desire to learn that extends beyond the classroom Proven ability to successfully work independently or as part of a larger team Proficiency with Microsoft Office software THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION: Previous internship or work experience in the engineering discipline is preferred Applicants available for more than one work term will be given preference Legal Disclaimer The above statements are intended to describe the nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this job.
