    WHAT WILL YOU DO?

    This is an exciting opportunity to join the cutting-edge next-generation sequencing (NGS) applications research and development (R&D) group at Thermo Fisher Scientific in Carlsbad, CA. Your primary responsibility will be to support new product introductions (NPI) focusing on targeted high-throughput sequencing assay development using the AmpliSeq and AmpliSeq HD technologies. Applications include oncology diagnostics, whole exome sequencing and novel sequencing-based applications.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

    • Providing complex and custom bioinformatics analysis to support development of new targeted sequencing assays.
    • Working in close collaboration with other bioinformatics, software, instrument and product management teams, both local and remote.
    • Applying innovative data mining approaches to troubleshoot and improve NGS assay performance.
    • Developing software and data analysis pipelines to automate analyses.
    • Helping molecular biologists with data interpretation and analyses such as variant calling, copy-number variation (CNV) detection, phasing and genome annotations.
  • Qualifications

    HOW WILL YOU GET HERE (EDUCATION / SKILLS / EXPERIENCE)?

    • Enrollment in a master’s or PhD program in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering or another similar field is preferred. Senior year in an undergraduate program will also be considered.
    • Proficiency in a scripting language is required. Python and/or R would be most useful.
    • Experience with Linux shell is highly desired.
    • Effective communication skills, especially for presenting scientific results, keeping records and working collaboratively in a team of scientists are necessary.
    • Prior experience with NGS and/or other scientific data analysis is a big plus.
    • In-depth understanding of genomics and molecular biology will make you a stronger candidate.
