Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied sciencefrom the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization. Organizational Overview The Omega Group in the Physics Department at BNL focuses on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. We have a strong physics program concentrated on measurements of Standard Model processes (Electroweak, Higgs, and top quark production) and on searches for new physical phenomena (Higgs, dark matter, supersymmetry, and exotics). The Omega Group has major responsibilities in the operation of the ATLAS Liquid Argon calorimeter, Cathode Strip Chambers in the muon spectrometer, trigger and software development, and has leading roles in the ATLAS Phase-I upgrade (Liquid Argon calorimeter, Muon New Small Wheel, and Trigger/Data Acquisition) and the HL-LHC upgrade (Silicon Strip detector, Liquid Argon calorimeter, and Trigger/Data Acquisition). The group also has a strong detector R&D programs on silicon detectors and in trigger/DAQ. BNL serves as the host laboratory for the U.S. ATLAS Operations Program, the U.S. ATLAS Phase-I & HL-LHC Upgrade Projects, the ATLAS Tier-1 computing facility, and is an active U.S. ATLAS Center.
