    The Health Services Director oversees several areas of strategic importance to Site Services and Genentech, including: Ergonomics, Industrial Hygiene, the Samples for Science Program which supports Genentech research, and a large Campus Health Center, which offers employees both preventive and real-time treatment in the areas of occupational and nonoccupational care. Genentech is viewed as an innovative leader in Health Services, which reflects Genentech’s care for the health and wellbeing of employees.

    This leader reports directly to the Executive Director of EHS and serves as a member of the EHS leadership team. A team of four professionals at the principal program manager level report directly to this position. These individuals develop and manage small teams, as well as programs, and serve as subject matter experts in their respective areas. The Director also oversees consultants, contractors and external service providers.

    This Director partners closely and ensures alignment with the leaders of Environment, Health & Safety and Directors and Vice Presidents of other functions essential to this work, including but not limited to the Chief Diversity Office, Genentech Research & Early Development, Product Development, Corporate Relations, Government Affairs, People & Culture, and Site Services.

    The Director will passionately advocate for a safe, healthy and sustainable work environment and bring experience leading health care centers within complex corporate environments.

    Job Duties/Responsibilities:

    • In collaboration with the EHS leadership team, develop high-impact EHS strategies and objectives that foster wellbeing as a business imperative for Genentech, including employees on the South San Francisco site with over 13,000 staff, in addition to our sites in Dixon, Portland, Washington DC, and field-based employees. Partner with Group Safety, Security, Health & Environment (SHE), People and Culture (P&C) and Integrated Sustainability in aligning wellbeing strategies. Represent EHS on the Genentech Live Well initiative core team.

    • In collaboration with the Chief Diversity Office, Product Development, and Genentech’s Research and Early Development (gRED) organizations, advocate for and strategically incorporate diversity, equity and inclusion into our campus health center services and Samples for Science program (a program supporting Genentech research).

    • Be a visible and dynamic champion for all of Environment, Health and Safety. Play a pivotal role in building the influence and impact of EHS as a strategic partner to the business.

    • Ensure optimum delivery of services, quality of care, and value from service providers. Set the long-term strategic service provider strategy and oversee the service providers to ensure high quality services are provided. Design long-term, high-impact programs and services that enable Genentech to continue to be an industry leader in Health Services. Serve as a catalyst for building adoption and engagement of new/expanded services and programs. Accountable for ongoing effective service needs assessments and increasing the utilization of services through marketing, branding and engaging communication.

    • Provide oversight to a team of professionals who lead areas of specialty including: Ergonomics, Industrial Hygiene, the Samples for Science Program to support Genentech research, and the Campus Health Center (which offers onsite healthcare, including bloodwork, immunization and travel health, physical therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic services, as well as health assessments and coaching).

    • Serve as key decision maker for all Health Services strategies, objectives, programs, and initiatives, as well as budget. This position is responsible for a multi-million dollar budget which includes long range forecasting, return on investment/business cases, business plans, and dashboards with operational and financial metrics. This position influences millions of dollars in Genentech’s spend on medical benefits.

    • Build relationships with industry thought leaders in other premier companies as well as within Roche and Genentech. Serve as an inspirational speaker and provide subject matter expertise and thought leadership internally and externally in health center management, employee health care, medical services, and total employee health. Leverage and champion internal and external best practices.

    • May be required to serve as a Safety Officer during disaster/emergency response and recovery efforts. May be required to serve as an EHS advisor (technical expert) for the emergency response team during company emergencies.

    • Strong communication skills. Ability to clearly articulate services and programs in a way that resonates with key stakeholders at all levels of the organization and with external partners. Ability to frame and deliver presentations/communications at executive level, including effective use of insights from data to influence and inspire people to care.

    • Strong people leadership capabilities, including experience directly managing employees, service providers, consultants and contractors. Proven ability to successfully coach, develop, and lead a team of technical experts and general EHS professionals. Able to inspire and motivate teams. Strong emotional intelligence and a collaborative approach is critical.

    Qualifications: Education, Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

    (Minimum requirements)

    • Education: Degreed in Health Care Administration, Occupational Medicine, Occupational Health Nursing, Public Health, or equivalent program. MBA desired.

    • Applicable permits/licenses and certifications required for medical doctors and nurses

    • 15+ years business experience in progressively more responsible roles in delivering corporate medical services (occupational and non-occupational). Must have at least 5 years experience managing a health clinic and have served as a health care practitioner in a clinical setting for at least 5 years. Experience in other relevant EHS functional areas, including ergonomics and industrial hygiene, is desired.

    • 5+ years directly managing people and leading multi-disciplinary teams. Experience managing consultants, contractors, and third-party service providers is a must.

    • Demonstrated success defining and implementing cohesive corporate health service strategies which were recognized within the industry as a leading practice.

    • Experience managing a multi million dollar department budget including oversight of large service provider contracts. Demonstrated success consistently meeting financial targets and performance metrics, improving business processes, and driving cost savings.

    • Basic understanding of Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other regulatory requirements applicable to the work environment. Experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device or high tech industries is desired.
