    Position summary:

    The CSO Office is sponsoring a unique opportunity for a highly talented individual looking to gain experience in our Research and Development organization and play a role in the design and development of technology critical to supporting Thermo Fisher’s position as the world leader in servicing science.

    The selected candidate will take part in the company’s Internship Program, where he/she will be part of a highly innovative environment and work in an interdisciplinary team together with R&D scientists, application and marketing specialists, as well as external collaborators.

    The intern will be responsible for his/her own project within the Analytical Instrumentation Group.

    The intern will be able to directly contribute to research efforts that aim towards developing or improving performance of key platforms, which are likely to produce important commercial impact in the future while being mentored by experts in the field. The intern will also learn various aspects of tuning/troubleshooting procedures in the fields of spectroscopy and analytical instrumentation research and gain insight into the key underlying technologies.

    The position starts in June, paid working 40 hours per week from June 2022 to August 2022. Opportunity exists for this position to continue through the academic year on a part-time basis to allow for class schedules.

    Essential Functions

    • The intern is responsible for performing experiments independently, reporting those results to business leadership, and utilizing those results to drive meaningful changes in the company’s processes and products

    • The intern will be called upon to support a variety of research and development projects on spectroscopy and analytical instrumentation

    • Design and execute scientific experiments to understand current challenges facing the business

    • Analyze and summarize large complex sets of data

    • Prepare collected data in a presentation style format to be presented to R&D leadership, project stakeholders, commercial marketing and product management teams

    • Present to technical and non-technical colleagues

    • The intern may also be called upon to build and test the performance of prototype instrumentation

    DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY

    • The intern would report directly to a research and development scientist or engineer

    SPECIFIC SCOPE DATA

    • Analytical Instrument data collection and spectral or other interpretation

    • Specific tasks will be tailored to the intern’s experience and abilities, but could include any of the following:

      • Wet chemistry

      • Gas analysis

      • Computer programming for data analysis (Python, MATLAB, R, Excel, etc.)

      • Rapid prototyping, such as 3D printing or machining, and designing or assembling electrical circuits or printed circuit boards

    Skills and abilities

    • Ability to work both independently and also as a member of a cross functional team

    • Strong willingness to learn, be mentored, and improve

    • Desire to contribute and improve design of new and existing scientific instrumentation products and applications

    • Strong customer focus

    • Desire to present to others about areas of expertise or of new results

    • Aptitude for hands-on experimentation, prototyping, and tinkering

    • Basic understanding of data analysis techniques

    • Basic understanding of various spectroscopic techniques

    QUALIFICATIONS

    REQUIRED LEVEL OF EDUCATION

    • The position is open to both undergraduate and graduate students who will have completed at least their Junior year in an accredited degree program prior to starting the internship

    REQUIRED AREA OF STUDY/MAJOR

    • Physics, physical chemistry, chemistry, analytical chemistry, chemical engineering, biology or a related engineering or scientific discipline
