    Molecular Biologist/Biochemist The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is a national leader in scientific research and development. As part of the Biological Sciences Group located within the Research Exploratory Development Department, this position is at the forefront APL's mission to provide critical contributions to critical challenges. Candidates should be highly motivated and dedicated to building world class expertise to solve challenges in biological sciences across the defense and national health application spaces. The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory is located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC. Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task): 1. Be a leader in the biochemistry/molecular biology laboratory. Drive efforts in experimental design and execution in diverse fields to include design and manipulation of recombinant and synthetic nucleic acids, protein purification and characterization, microbiological culture and engineering. Plan experiments from start-to-finish including data analysis. Troubleshoot and optimize experimental protocols.(75%) 2. Actively contribute to projects. Assure milestones are met on time and be responsive to sponsor needs. Build a comprehensive understanding of project goals and work towards the broader mission of work assignments. Become a sought out resource by consistently producing high-quality results.(10%) 3. Ensure a well-functioning laboratory and a positive work environment. Help maintain laboratory facilities and manage inventory of reagents. Be an example of a courteous coworker and help set a standard for best practices in the laboratory.(10%) 4. Participate in the biology and APL community. Present data at lab meetings and to department management. Take advantage of collaborations and innovation opportunities to help ensure the success of APLs mission.(5%) Note: This job summary and listing of duties is for the purpose of describing the position and its essential functions at time of hire and may change over time. Required Qualifications: B.S. in a biological science or engineering field with coursework and lab experience relevant to molecular/synthetic biology, biochemistry, microbiology and/or biotechnology. Two years or more professional experience in biological research Excellent organizational and communication skills, ability to work as part of a team. Proficiency with MS office, databases and domain-relevant software tools. Desired Qualifications: Protein purification and characterization Design and construction of genetic constructs Genetic manipulation of bacteria Security: Eligibility for a secret clearance required. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
