    SUMMARY OF INTERNSHIP

    This internship position provides an opportunity for students who are currently pursuing a graduate degree in bioengineering, biomedical, mechanical, systems, electrical engineering, and physics to get experience in developing complex life sciences tools and systems in a research and development environment while interacting with cross-functional groups such as molecular biology, chemistry, software, bioinformatics, and product management. The intern will contribute to on-going systems engineering & architecture activities for next-generation microarray products. As a member of the team, the outcome of your work will play a critical role in helping us fulfill our mission of making the world healthier, cleaner, and safer. THE POSITION STARTS IN JUNE, PAID WORKING 40 HOURS PER WEEK THROUGH AUGUST. An opportunity exists for this position to continue throughout the academic year on a part-time basis to allow for class schedules.

    Hiring Locations may include South San Francisco, CA, or Pleasanton, CA.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Develop analytical models and/or simulations to understand the complex engineering subsystems and systems such as optical, fluidics, and mechanical under the supervision of senior engineers.
    • Work with development/systems leads to perform feasibility analysis, define system architectures, and determine the cost & benefits of candidate architectures.
    • Quickly design and build prototype sub-systems for feasibility studies & provide in-depth analyses of their capabilities.
    • Design experimental plans, perform studies, and analyze and communicate results and their impact on the project through written reports, presentations, and interactive discussions.
    • Participate in perform system integration, testing, and troubleshooting and provide data-driven recommendations.
    • Contribute ideas for development, support other functional teams in development efforts.
  • Qualifications
    • Students currently enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. degree in related engineering, science, or life science discipline.
    • PREFERRED MAJORS: Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or other related major/s.
    • Understanding of molecular biology techniques (qPCR, CE, next-generation sequencing, microarray), microarray chemistry, and DNA synthesis knowledge is desired.
    • Knowledge and experience with analytical techniques are a plus (e.g. LC-MS, HPLC, UV-VIS, SEM, etc.).
    • To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States, and should not require, now or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status

  • Desired skills
    • Demonstrated ability to identify and provide solutions to complex problems and familiar with methods & tools as Design of Experiment (DOE), root-cause analysis (RCA), failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA), etc.
    • Experience in Photolithography, microfabrication, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
    • Familiar with design, modeling, simulation, and data analysis & acquisition tools, such as SOLIDWORKS, JMP, MATLAB, Python, Excel, Labview, etc.
    • Strong, hands-on ability in prototyping, system integration, & debug of complex instrumentation, including optical, electrical, mechanical, fluidics, and software components.
    • Ability to work independently and with cross-functional teams from all levels across the organization.
    • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
    • Self-motivated executer, initiator, and agile learner.
