    Lighthouse Lab Services seeks a Pathology Director for a medical lab in Memphis, TN. This lab provides comprehensive pathology services, which include Surgical Pathology, Clinical Pathology, Cytology, Blood Bank, Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Genetics, Histology and Molecular/Translational Laboratory, to area hospitals and community partners, and it operates an in-house Histology and Molecular laboratory.

    The Ideal Candidate: Reporting to the Vice President of Specialty Operations and in partnership with the Chair of Pathology, the Pathology Director provides leadership of financial, operational and regulatory performance of the department. The Director of Pathology is responsible for physician relationships, pathology quality assurance, quality control, laboratory regulations/accreditation, histology and molecular laboratory workflows, technical informatics and data analysis. The Director of Pathology serves as the primary point of contact for leadership of client organizations and is responsible for cultivating collaborative internal and external partnerships.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • In collaboration with the Chair of Pathology, leads pathologists, managers and staff in coordination and communication of the pathology mission, strategic plans, operational plans, policies and procedures.
    • Provides day-to-day direction, and manages human resource activities including recruiting and hiring, performance management, and coaching opportunities for career development.
    • Manages non-staff resources, including laboratories, instruments, procedures, and equipment.
    • Oversees the training, quality assurance, workforce planning, project management, business process design, reporting and analysis, and financial management (P&L responsibility) and overall stewardship and leadership of the pathology department.
    • Responsible for the development and performance of capital and operating budgets for department. Accountability and responsibility for department P&L. Develops and implements plans to address budget variances.
    • Performs costing for anatomic and clinical pathology tasks, monitoring financial status reports, documenting and off-normal events and scope variations.
    • Develops and implements strategic, operational efficiency initiatives and scientific plans related to technical and professional services in surgical pathology, cytology, blood bank, chemistry, microbiology, molecular genetics, histology and molecular laboratory operations.
    • Reviews experimental design and scientific data.
    • Leads bioinformatics and operational initiatives, including the architecture and design of the LIMS system for NGS molecular testing for potential clinical assay service offerings.
    • Maintain client and clinician satisfaction through superior Technical and Professional Pathology services coupled with superior customer service.
    • Ensures laboratory operations are completed in compliance with SOP’s, and department meets and adheres to all applicable federal, state, JCAHO, and local regulatory agency requirements. Responsible for ensuring the department and facilities success in relevant regulatory surveys.
    • Identifies and defines new business opportunities in pathology and/or scientific development opportunities.
    • Creates and develops relationships and networks with leadership of current/potential client organizations in order to maintain and grow business.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    • Surgical pathology, cytology, blood bank, chemistry, microbiology, molecular genetics, histology and laboratory workflows and operations. Knowledge of clinical laboratory operations including work force planning.
    • Relevant laboratory regulatory standards (e.g., CAP, CLIA, GLP).
    • National/regional/local pathology issues (AP/CP) and trends. Ability to relate this understanding to current and future markets.
    • Ability to develop strategic vision and translate into tactical plans. Requires a strong business, planning, analysis and financial skill set with the ability to manage complex projects involving multiple stakeholders.
    • Ability to develop strong working relationships and to influence key internal and external constituents to meet critical objectives.
    • A management style that emphasizes teamwork, participation, communication, and client/customer service and has demonstrated leadership in promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace and community. The ability to delegate and still maintain close control over operations.
    • Outstanding communication skills and the ability to work with all levels within the organization. Excellent presentation skills.
    • Ability to identify new business opportunities with new partner organizations as well as increasing the depth and breadth of service offering with current clients.

    Education and Experience Qualifications:

    • Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Laboratory Sciences, Molecular Genetics, Health Administration, or Business Administration required
    • 10 years progressive leadership experience in a high complexity lab environment required. Experience managing complex technical operations in a clinical pathology operation performing high complexity testing required.
    • Prior experience leading and working in clinical molecular environment preferred.
