    Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. We are currently seeking a Competitive Intelligence Analyst in our Client Value & Practice Management department, reporting directly to the Competitive Intelligence Manager.

    The role will reside in the New York office with hybrid work capabilities and will be responsible for supporting the firm’s lawyers by monitoring the legal industry, including Akin Gump’s various peer/competitor firms, to help advise on macro thematic issues, trends, news, and other factors that may directly or indirectly impact the firm and its client base. Under the direction of the Director of Client Value Analytics, and the supervision of the Competitive Intelligence Manager(s), the Analyst will oversee market, legal industry research, analysis, and reporting efforts for the firm and its various practice groups. In this role, the Analyst will identify, analyze and communicate relevant and actionable information to ultimately aid the firm’s overall business strategies while also ensuring the firm’s core values and culture are upheld. The Analyst will also support the Managers and Directors in developing processes, systems, tools, and techniques to identify, capture and synthesize key intelligence with the ultimate goal of providing quantitative and qualitative decision-support.

    Key responsibilities of this position include :

    • Work closely with the firm lawyers, business leaders and business departments to understand and evaluate the firm’s current and relevant economics and intelligence needs, establish objectives and design effective processes to address priorities.
    • Monitor the firm’s legal market/competitor/peer intelligence efforts by proactively and reactively conducting comprehensive research, evaluating information, and producing practical, objective, responsive, and compelling reports.
    • Monitor global economics/markets/sectors, industries, legal market intelligence (surveys, peer reviews, news, trade papers, etc.), firm key clients, and competitor/peer firms and share pertinent information with stakeholders, with a particular focus on business issues that may impact legal strategies; stay current on news and trends relating to clients and prospective clients and peer/competitor firms.
    • Support the creation and delivery of thought leadership on the legal industry via peer reviews, publications of research, analysis, and survey findings.
    • Assist in developing systems for monitoring and highlighting publications and other content channels for topics, trends and developments that impact the legal industry, the firm’s clients and/or potential clients.
    • Authenticate, analyze, and distribute data cross-departmentally, design and create visual, actionable dashboards for end-users, and solve complex business problems for high-value stakeholders.
    • Conduct research and analysis of clients, industries, markets, technologies and competitors.
    • Conduct research assignments for internal and client presentations and firm strategy meetings; provide detailed analysis to help drive action and solve complex business issues and meet firm key performance objectives.
    • Communicate proactively on developments impacting the firm’s business/matters and clients, guiding and advising the firm leadership and lawyers on a regular basis; anticipate internal and external business challenges and/or regulatory issues.
    • Promote awareness of firm economics and intelligence resources available to lawyers.
    • Coordinate with the other firm infrastructure, such as Client Value, Business Development, Research & Information Services and Knowledge Management, to remain informed on any issues or initiatives that impact the firm and support in their endeavors when appropriate.
    • Track and assess requests and follow up if and as developments occur that impact original research/analysis.
    • Works on other special projects, as assigned.

    Qualifications (Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):

    • A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, or a related field is required. A Master’s Degree and/or additional certifications a plus.
    • 5+ years of relevant experience in a consulting firm, financial institution, investment management, or law firm environment.
    • Understanding of the legal market and work closely with teams to ensure reports and advice aligns with overarching global financial market trends/themes, political and economic landscape.
    • Become a subject matter expert regarding peer firms and strategic direction.
    • Understanding of the firm’s structure, key clients, and knowledge of potential issues impacting the firm and its clients (economic, political, regulatory, etc.) to be responsive to lawyer needs/requests.
    • Ability to communicate in a compelling, concise, practical way and produce objective and responsive reports, presentations and information that drive action in a forward-thinking manner.
    • Analytical ability to issue spot and provide credible, thoughtful solutions and decision support analysis to practice group leaders and other lawyers.
    • Knowledgeable and familiar with new competitive intelligence tools, systems, vendors and advancements within the market.
    • Flexibility to work with various data sources and information sets.
    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively and execute on project plans (project manage).
    • Superior written and oral communication skills.
    • Logical and critical thinker; able to identify and apply relevant qualitative and quantitative data.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and sensitivity to the complexities of a partnership and multi- office global practice firm.
    • Working knowledge of MS Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint, and ability to work in various software applications as needed.
    • Proficiency with research databases, such as Lexis, Bloomberg, Lex Machina and ALM Legal Compass.
    • Knowledge of research methodologies.
    • Strong service orientation, work ethic and attention to detail.
    • Ability to prioritize, manage heavy workload and adjust to changing priorities, work independently and as a member of a team, manage multiple projects with specific deadlines, and complete tasks under time pressure as necessary.
    • Ability to quickly and proactively identify and analyze problems to develop solutions and deliver results.
    • Strong analytical skills, with excellent business acumen.
    • Ability to use initiative and judgment to accomplish results.
    • Ability to use critique of work to improve performance.
