Summary of Internship

The Packaging Engineering Intern position will assist in the completion of packaging related projects. The intern will assist in completing tasks assigned by the Packaging Engineering Manager as well as the LPD Packaging Engineer. These tasks will include distribution lab testing coordination, trial shipment tracking, prototype sample tracking, design inputs, data collection/analysis, and damaged freight investigation. The intern will also lead a project during the assignment to deliver cost savings to the organization.

Essential Functions

• Provide engineering support related to packaging development projects including testing and design
• Assist the Packaging Engineering team in improving packaging and optimize costs by executing tasks on active projects
• Improve packaging standardization by assisting in data collection and documentation of current packaging materials
• Lead and complete and achievable packaging cost savings project within the assignment period
• Contribute to team innovation by researching and recommending cutting-edge packaging technology and materials for application at Thermo Fisher
• Identify opportunities for future projects and improvements by analyzing current processes and data

Skills and Abilities

• Ability to work independently and as a member of a cross-functional team
• Willingness to learn, be mentored, and improve
• Desire to contribute and improve design of new and existing packaging for laboratory products
• Exceptional customer focus
• Desire to teach other engineers about new packaging technology
• Familiarity with industry distribution and packaging testing (ISTA, ASTM, etc.) a plus
• Familiarity with packaging development software such as Solidworks or ArtiosCAD a plus
• Student currently enrolled in classes leading to a Packaging Science or related degree
