Projects range across the domains of public health, social science, sample surveys, engineering, education, and the environment. Our goal is to solve problems and inform decision-making through innovation, collaboration, and technical expertise such as advanced analytics (machine learning, deep learning, predictive modeling, NLP and text analytics, network analysis), software development, and interactive data visualization. About RTI RTI International is a nonprofit research organization of about 5,000 people around the globe. Our four-and-a-half-year-old Center for Data Science (CDS) is offering a paid student internship for the 2019 summer months of May through August. Staff members in CDS work on research projects across RTI, all aimed at improving the human condition, from solving national and international problems to working in our local communities. So, for example, we may be working with the Department of Justice at the same time as we're working with the MacArthur and Arnold Foundations and the local law enforcement, all related to solving problems in criminal justice. Our work has ranged from public health to criminal and social justice to education, engineering, and the environment. In our 4.5-year existence, we've worked on dozens of projects, presented our work at conferences, at Universities, to federal, state, and local governments, and at the White House. We've created open source tools and applications, become thought leaders in areas like data-driven justice, and appeared in local and national media. Our data science interns have performed a range of data science activities (according to their skills and interests) on a variety of R&D and policy-informing projectsmodeling and analytics, data viz, database creation and data cleaning, creating web applications, and working with various sources of big data. You will work with entrepreneurial data scientists and software developers in our Center, solving problems, using open source software, writing and coding, creating web applications, and collaborating with subject matter experts. Some interns have published and presented their work at conferences. Our 2018 summer intern supported an NCDS grant to create a software application that used an ML technique known as "active learning" to more efficiently label text data. Required Qualifications Advanced undergraduate students who will be graduating in 2020 or 2021, or students pursuing a master's degree with strong quantitative skills in areas such as math, statistics, computer science, physics, or any computational science with a current GPA of 3.3 or above.
