SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is one of 17 Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories, and operated by Stanford University on behalf of the DOE. SLAC develops and operates some of the worlds premier science facilities, including the first hard X-ray free-electron laser. Engineering Intern [Level II] Job Requisition #: 3216 Classification Title: Temporary Non-Exempt Grade: Location: Menlo Park, CA (HQ) # of openings: 4 Description SLAC National Accelerator Laboratorys Electronics Engineering Division (EED) has a temporary employment opportunity for a student or recent graduate who is interested in controls technology or accelerator science and seeking to gain work experience. The Electronics Engineering Division (EED) is responsible for electronics subsystems for all accelerators and many test facilities throughout SLAC. The Accelerator controls applications at SLAC are a heterogeneous mix of embedded real-time software running on open source RTEMS and Linux RT, as well as industrial control processes running on PLCs and Linux servers. Linux host applications typically control Ethernet-attached devices, execute client-server middleware, graphical user interfaces (GUIs), efficiency tools, and computing infrastructure. Electronics hardware include embedded systems design, industrial controllers, analog and digital signal processing and all hardware/firmware/software interfaces. The student will assist in the design, and testing of the electronics systems while working with engineers, designers and technicians. He/She will also be expected to present and communicate effectively with users, team members and management. Applicants with interests in electrical/computer engineering will receive consideration as well. Note : This is an hourly, non-benefits eligible temporary-nonexempt summer student position (work at 50% full-time equivalent or more), not to exceed 980 hours in six consecutive months Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled in an educational program or recently graduated, and have US work authorization. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education & Experience Pursuing a BS or MS degree in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science student or STEM related technical field. Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to complete assignments. Ability to work in a fast-paced and collaborative work environment. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and able to work in small groups. A background or experience in the following is strongly desired Basic programming skills in C/C++, python or Java. Some experience with MatLab is desirable. Experience with electronics test equipment. Hands on experience with mechanical tools.
