    Position Description

    Mission Engineering is the deliberate planning, analyzing, organizing, and integrating of current and emerging operational and system capabilities to achieve desired warfighting mission effects. It is an analytical and data-driven approach to decompose and analyze the constituent parts of a military mission in order to identify measurable trade-offs and draw conclusions in technical studies.

    A US Navy/USMC Aviation Mission Engineer (ME) civil servant position at the Naval Air Warfare Center has a direct impact on future Naval capabilities, requirements, and investments. They are at the forefront of design and analysis of the System of Systems (SoS) capabilities we need to win future wars.

    Position Duties/Responsibilities

    The ME will become a leading expert in the technical requirements, capabilities, and gaps across the System of Systems (SoS) for assigned US Navy and USMC aviation missions in order to inform DOD decisions on the future of warfighting capabilities. The ME will build the technical capability baselines needed to support the Fleet in developing future Concepts of Employment (CONEMPs) of how the Navy will fight future wars. High priority/impact kill chains will be decomposed, evaluated, and assessed to determine warfighting effectiveness, interoperability, and residual gaps in the full operational mission context. The ME will identify, evaluate, and make recommendations regarding SoS solution options to meet mission requirements. The ME may also participate in, or potentially lead, associated trade-off studies.

    Preferred candidates will possess systems level knowledge of multiple aviation platforms, weapons, networks, and/or sensors, including their role in tactical employment options (e.g. kill chain or effects chain). This candidate will also be adept at self-study to maintain currency in the assigned mission area and associated platform technologies and tactics, as well as skilled in teamwork and communications. Candidate experience as an operational aircrew member on US Navy or USMC manned or unmanned platforms is highly valued. This includes platforms such as: F/A-18A-F, EA-18G, F-35, F-14A/B/D, S-3B, AV-8B, E-6B, P-3C, EP-3E, P-8A, C-2A, E-2C/D, MH-60S/R, UH-1Y, MH-53E, CH-53E/K, AH-1W/Z, C/KC-130, CV/MV/CMV-22, MQ-4C, BAMS-D, MQ-8C, and MQ-9A/B. Experience as an Air Force or Army aviation operator/aircrew also considered. Target candidate pool is primarily focused on end of first tour Junior Officers departing the military, but military experience is not required. STEM degrees are preferred.
