JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Hardware Engineering Center (HWEC) is an engineering organization that focuses on product development, producibility and mission assurance. It is a vital link in the integrated product development process that allows Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems to introduce reliable new products faster, better, and more economically.

The candidate will work within the Optics and Lasers sections of the Hardware Engineering Center. Specific responsibilities may include:

• Develop and build test set-ups and use of optical tools such as interferometers, theodolites and spectrophotometers.
• Align and test of opto-mechanical sensors and laser systems.
• Design and analyze optical sensors including ray tracing, stray light analysis, and tolerance analyses.
• Work with suppliers to get optical components and systems that meet requirements.

The chosen candidate will learn and apply of technical standards, principles, concepts and techniques. Candidates will be expected to provide recommendations to a variety of technical problems of appropriate scope and complexity, working under general supervision. Successful candidates should expect to be immersed in a fast-paced, team-based, and challenging technical environment where an individual with talent and initiative can stand out and thrive.

U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

• The candidate must have a good understanding of optics, lasers, electromagnetic propagation, and their interaction with materials
• The candidate must have completed lab and/or analysis projects and be able to explain the concepts and outcomes
• Must be a college Junior, Senior or Graduate student by Fall 2019
• Must be able to obtain an interim Secret security clearance PRIOR to starting
• This position requires the eligibility to obtain a security clearance. Except in rare circumstances, only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
• U.S. Citizenship is required is required as this position will require the ability to access US only data systems.

DESIRED SKILLS:

• Experience with optical design and analysis tools, such as Code V or Fred.
• Experience with hands on assembly and alignment of optical tests or assemblies
• Experience with optical measurement tools such as interferometers and spectrophotometers.
• Experience working with lasers
• Demonstrated leadership experience through school or extracurricular projects

REQUIRED EDUCATION (INCLUDING MAJOR):

• Currently pursuing a BS / BA degree from a four-year university and entering as a college Junior or Senior year OR pursuing a MS / MA / PhD by Fall 2019.
• Must be working towards a degree in Optical Engineering, Laser Physics, or equivalent, or equivalent technical discipline.
• Must be appropriate grade level listed above.
