The Work and Why It Matters
Nationwide, students are experiencing a significant interruption in their formal education due to COVID-19 and resulting school closures. While educators and students alike have many unprecedented challenges to overcome this upcoming school year, educators report that their top concern is students falling behind in math. This concern is heightened for educators in high poverty districts who teach predominantly black or Latinx students.
Now more than ever we need talented, caring, and capable people committed to supporting our students in their academic and social development. Finding academic interventions that address inequities that historically underserved students face is one of our nation’s most urgent challenges.
Position Overview
Saga Education’s AmeriCorps Member - Remote Math Fellows manage a small cohort of approximately 15-18 high school students in the Options School Setting. Options Schools are non-traditional school settings for students who have been out of school and seeking to return or need to earn credits in an accelerated program. Math Fellows will be working with young adults between the age of 15-21 to promote academic success by focusing intently to provide individualized instruction and build strong relationships with students during their year of service. During a typical school day, Math Fellows will work with 1-3 students at a time and facilitate lessons during 6 class periods per day. Math Fellows will implement Saga’s proprietary curriculum to foster academic success and help students reach their goals. In addition to offering academic support, Math Fellows also serve as student advocates and mentors and must build strong, meaningful relationships with their students.
