ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS, Center for Career Development
The Assistant Director for Internship Programs provides operational leadership and strategic direction for Boston University's funded internship portfolio within the Center for Career Development (CCD). Reporting to the Director of Internships and Industry Partnerships, the Assistant Director oversees a growing suite of internship funding programs—including the Yawkey Nonprofit Internship Program—ensuring their effective administration, continuous improvement, and expanded reach across all schools and colleges.
The Assistant Director will supervise a team of program managers, leads assessment and data strategy for internship initiatives, and partners with colleagues across campus to advance equitable access to experiential learning opportunities for all students. The Assistant Director translates the broader vision for internship programming into scalable systems, processes, and evidence-based practices. This role combines strategic program development, people management, and analytical leadership to ensure funded internship programs operate efficiently, demonstrate impact, and advance Boston University's mission to provide transformative career education.
Essential Functions:
Provide direct supervision and mentorship to the Yawkey Internship Program Manager and additional internship program managers as new funding sources are established. Foster a collaborative team culture focused on professional growth, continuous improvement, and mission-driven service to students.
Lead the strategic development and operational management of multiple funded internship programs, totaling over $1.5 million annually. Oversee all phases of program administration to ensure consistency, efficiency, and scalability. Drive innovation in program delivery through strategic use of technology and partner with campus colleagues to promote awareness and ensure equitable access for students, particularly those from marginalized and under-resourced communities.
Design and implement a robust assessment framework to measure program outcomes, student success indicators, and return on investment for funding partners. Lead data collection, analysis, and visualization efforts to generate actionable insights. Produce comprehensive annual reports for foundation partners, institutional leadership, and campus stakeholders that demonstrate program impact, inform strategic decisions, and drive continuous program improvement.
Manage and optimize program budgets, ensuring responsible stewardship of endowed and restricted funds. Develop multi-year financial projections to inform cohort capacity planning and program expansion strategies. Engage in benchmarking with peer institutions to ensure award amounts, program structures, and operational practices align with industry best practices and evolving student needs.
Collaborate with the Director of Internships and Industry Partnerships to strengthen relationships with foundation partners, employers, and nonprofit organizations. Serve as primary liaison to the Yawkey Foundation and other funding partners, ensuring program activities align with donor intent and reporting requirements.
Represent the CCD and Boston University in professional associations, conferences, and networks focused on experiential education, internship funding, and career development. Stay current on trends in experiential learning, internship policy, and best practices in program assessment. Contribute to the field through presenting, publishing, or serving on committees at local, regional, and national levels.
