IDENTIFY AND BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH KEY MEDIA AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS CONSTITUENTS THAT LEAD TO MEASURABLE MEDIA RELATIONS OUTCOMES THAT EXTEND THE IMAGE AND REPUTATION OF THE UNIVERSITY, AND ASSESS NEWS TRENDS TO APPROPRIATELY PITCH STORIES TO LOCAL, REGIONAL, NATIONAL PRINT AND DIGITAL NEWS OUTLETS, AS WELL AS EVOLVING SOCIAL MEDIA OPTIONS. IDENTIFY EXPERT FACULTY TO POSITION IN VARIOUS MEDIA CHANNELS TO ELEVATE AND EXPAND THE IMAGE AND REPUTATION OF THE UNIVERSITY. EXPLORE DISTRIBUTION OPPORTUNITIES AND METHODS THAT TRANSCEND TRADITIONAL MEDIUMS TO REACH TARGETED AUDIENCES IN INNOVATIVE WAYS AND RESULT IN AMPLE MEDIA COVERAGE ACROSS COMMUNICATION CHANNELS. SERVE AS THE PUBLIC FACE OF THE UNIVERSITY FOR NEWS OUTLETS. COLLABORATE ON CRISIS COMMUNICATIONS TO DISTRIBUTE CONSISTENT MESSAGING ACROSS MEDIUMS. SUPERVISE AND LEAD A TEAM OF PUBLIC RELATIONS INTERNS TO HELP ACCOMPLISH PR GOALS AND TASKS. SERVE AS A VITAL MEMBER OF THE APU LIFE TEAM AND CIRT TEAM. MANAGE THE UNIVERSITY OPERATOR.

     

    REQUIRED EDUCATION

    • B.A. in English, journalism, communication, public relations, or related field; master’s degree in communications or leadership preferred.

     

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

    • Three-five years of professional public relations experience, preferably in higher education or a not-for-profit setting, with demonstrated experience and proven outcomes in public and media relations, including event promotion, ability to evaluate future professional trends, and well-versed in social media.
    • Demonstrated experience in management required as well.

     

    PRIMARY DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Develop and execute aggressive public relations plans to advance strategic communication messaging, and university branding efforts amid growing complexity in the media mix and method netration
    • Partner with the Executive Director for Strategic Communication to identify branding and public affairs objectives, developing public relations campaigns annually to advance these goals.
    • Collaborate with the SCE team to identify client needs and objectives, aligning public relations efforts with branding and public affairs initiatives. 
    • Research and assess trends to identify appropriate media relations endeavors to support public relations campaigns. Pursue stories, experts, and trends that result in media coverage.
    • Maintain consistent contact with key campus constituents and build relationships with faculty to promote faculty research and achievements.
    • Produce web articles that advance the university’s academic reputation. 
    • Develop and execute strategic communication plans, including internal and external communication, for large university events.
    • Cultivate working relationships with media professionals through regular phone calls, news materials distribution, and personal meetings.
    • Advise key APU personnel as to the climate of the media, providing direction, talking points, fact sheets, and action items.
    • Oversee the university’s social media presence and policies, including developing a publishing schedule to align with the university’s branding and communication goals, monitoring accounts daily, and tracking and reporting social media analytics.
    • Provide social media consultation to offices and departments across the university to encourage alignment with university branding, voice, and messaging.
    • Become an expert in Meltwater and Merit’s distribution tools, increasing the university’s social media impressions and traditional media placements.
    • Serve as a resource to media representatives for university facts, statistics, and photos.
    • Supervise the University Operator, who is an extension of the PR team.
    • Serve as a vital part of the communication team on CIRT.
    • Work with the ED and strategic communication team to advise administration on communication strategy in times of crisis or significant campus situations. 
    • Conduct research and develop case studies, fact sheets, and educational documents to help the university proactively plan for crisis handling.
    • Partner with the ED in media training opportunities to prepare administration for crisis scenarios and how to address the media and university community.
    • Produce situation overviews and talking points in partnership with the ED for specific situations as they occur.
    • Serve as a resource to the SCEl team for current university facts and story ideas.
    • Lead a team of public relations interns to produce articles for web, magazine, and engagement usage.
    • Manage media relations web presence, building a strategy and developing dynamic content to draw media and other users to the site.
    • Serve as an integral member of the APU Life team.
    • Develop messages for the West Campus marquee based on key events, community activities, and institutional communication plans.
    • Performs other duties as required by the supervisor.

     

    SKILLS

    • Knowledge of HTML coding, Fireworks, Adobe Photoshop, and Dreamweaver. 
    • Knowledge of and experience in writing media materials that generate results.
    • Proven relationship with media and knowledge of various media venues. 
    • Demonstrated competence in utilizing effective PR software platforms as well as investigating and evaluating new systems to increase effectiveness and maximize outcomes. 
    • Ability to make decisions quickly. 
    • Excellent prioritization, organizational, and time-management skills.
    • Demonstrated flexibility, professionalism under pressure, and self-directed approach. 
    • Track record of recruiting, retaining, and developing student interns in increasing levels of responsibility and across disciplines.

    • Demonstrate strong speaking skills as well as exceptional technical writing/editing competency.
    • Ability to function independently and in teams. 
    • Able to manage numerous projects simultaneously as well as guide students to achieve desired results.

    COMPENSATION

    • Grade 11: $59,345-77,148/annually
    • Salary will be commensurate with qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
