    Job Description

    The Disability Specialist works for the Center for Learning & Accessible Student Services (CLASS). CLASS leads the Augsburg community in advancing disability access and equity. 

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Determine reasonable accommodations, based on Section 504, ADA, and best practices, for current and prospective students with disabilities to provide equal access to the educational experience, programs, and facilities.
    • Coach, instruct, and support individual students with disabilities to facilitate the development of self-advocacy skills, effective time management, and learning strategies.
    • Recruit, interview, and orient incoming students to educate them regarding CLASS services, policies, and procedures.
    • Collaborate with students, Gage Center colleagues, faculty, staff, and parents to analyze, problem-solve, and establish a course of action and refer to community resources, as necessary.
    • When appropriate, advise students on the interaction between their disabilities and course selection and registration to meet the University’s General Ed, Graduation Skills, and major department requirements
    • Consult with Augsburg staff, faculty, and administrators to determine essential course components and ensure institutional access and inclusion for students with disabilities.

    ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

    • Cultivate professional development to obtain information and remain current in the Disability Resources field.
    • Participate in training and outreach activities to increase disability awareness at Augsburg and in the community at large.
    • Keep timely and accurate case notes in the database used by CLASS.
    • All other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).

    WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

    • Typical work environment is an office environment.
    • Regular computer use. 
    • Frequently present and counsel verbally in a clear manner, listen/hear; regular telephone use.
    • Sitting for long periods of time.
    • This position is scheduled to work 10 months/year.

    Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree; master’s degree preferred.
    • Minimum of (three) 3 years of experience working with people with disabilities.
    • Knowledge of laws pertaining to people with disabilities including ADA and Section 504.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

    • Basic word processing skills; basic computer knowledge.
    • Previous post-secondary experience preferred.
    • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse work environment.
    • Ability to be attentive to details, accurate, and precise.
    • Ability to lead/teach, work in a team environment, and work independently with little or no supervision.
    • Ability to reason/analyze; maintain confidentiality; and demonstrate patience, and understanding.
    • Ability to show initiative, multi-task and organize workflow, manage one or more multiple projects, and handle frequent interruptions.
