    This position is responsible for assisting the General Counsel in providing a high level of professional legal service by representing and advising the University on a broad range of litigation, risk, and compliance matters in the Labor & Employment area. The position will handle most litigation phases in-house, including pre-litigation dispute resolution, pleadings, discovery, and motion practice, and will oversee outside employment counsel when needed. Located within the Division of University Integrity at Azusa Pacific University, we strive to support the University’s Christian mission with wisdom, understanding, and compassion.

     

    REQUIRED EDUCATION

    • A J.D. from an ABA accredited law school.

     

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

    • Seven to ten (7-10) years’ experience in labor and employment litigation defense and supporting the Human Resources compliance function (whether as in-house or outside counsel).
    • Experience in higher education law and/or nonprofit / religious corporation governance is strongly preferred. Additional experience in benefits is a plus.
    • Must be a member in good standing with the State Bar of California or able to become a member within one year.

     

    PRIMARY DUTIES

    • Personally handles employment arbitration and litigation, including prelitigation dispute resolution (mediation), court appearances, pleadings, discovery, motion practice, and managing outside counsel as approved.
    • Provides day-to-day support for the University’s Human Resources function, including operations support and advice to enable the University to conduct business in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
    • Provides day-to-day advice on employment contracts, employment disputes, allegations of discrimination, and workers’ compensation matters (in coordination with the University’s workers’ compensation carrier, as appropriate).
    • Evaluates and makes recommendations regarding appropriate compliance training/education to University community areas regarding Labor & Employment matters.
    • Provides advice as directed to leaders and managers on legal matters affecting the University.
    • Serves as the day-to-day interface with outside counsel and others representing the University in counseling and litigation/claims matters.
    • Regular, punctual attendance as required by the supervisor based on department needs.
    • Other duties as may be assigned by the General Counsel.

    TECHNOLOGIES

    • Proficiency in legal research platforms (Lexis Nexis and Westlaw) and Microsoft programs, including Word and Excel.
    • Working knowledge of Google Docs.

     

    COMPENSATION

    • Grade 23: $134,848-$175,303/annually
    • Salary will be commensurate with qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
