    The university Special Services Officer serves to provide for the general protection of life and property throughout the APU community and the campus facilities. The officer will patrol the campus to pro-actively remove opportunities for crimes to occur.  This is an emergency response position and at any time there may be a need to immediately respond to security, safety, life threatening, or other urgent situations.  The Special Services Officer must be flexible to be assigned any shift, based on the needs of the department, which could include working holidays and weekends. 

     

    REQUIRED EDUCATION

    • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
    • Minimum of 15 units of college level education.
    • California P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Police Academy Certificate of Completion (within last 3 years) or Level III/II Reserve Officer Certification or Eligibility to attend a P.O.S.T. Certified Police Academy upon selection or be an Honorably Retired Peace Officer from a California agency.
    • Possession of or eligibility to obtain a BSIS armed guard card.
    • EACH CANDIDATE MUST BE AT LEAST 21 YEARS OF AGE AT TIME OF APPOINTMENT.

Academy within the last 3 years, is an Honorably Retired Peace Officer from a California agency or can produce a verified T-Score of 42 or above within the last 12 months)
    • PHYSICAL AGILITY (May be waived upon evidence of passing a POST Job Test within the previous 6 months or are an Honorably Retired Peace Officer from a California agency)
    • ORAL INTERVIEW
    • ADMINISTRATIVE INTERVIEW
    • POLYGRAPH (May be waived if an Honorably Retired Peace Officer from a California agency and selected for this position within one year of retirement date)
    • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION (A full background Investigation may be waived if an Honorably Retired Peace Officer from a California agency and selected for this positon within 3 months of retirement date)
    • PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAM (May be waived if an Honorably Retired Peace Officer from a California agency and selected for this position within 3 months of retirement date)

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

    • Previous college and/or university campus safety/security/law enforcement experience preferred or equivalent on the job experience.
    • Must possess a current valid CA driver license. 
    • Free of any Felony convictions

     

    PRIMARY DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Patrols university property, in a vehicle, on a bicycle or on foot, to enforce laws and provide security and traffic control on and in close proximity to campus properties.
    • Interact positively with campus community members on a daily basis and assist members in identifying potential safety and/or criminal problems.
    • Proactively contribute to the department’s community policing program.
    • Investigate traffic accidents within the boundaries of the APU Campus and prepare accident reports.
    • Perform physical security checks of campus facilities, ensuring facilities are in use by appropriate personnel.
    • Responds to emergency and non-emergency radio calls as well as responding to all emergencies and disasters on campus.
    • Conduct student safety training; including fire drills, evacuation procedures, and disaster preparedness.
    • Be available and ready at any point during shift to respond to community needs.
    • Observes, reports, and identifies persons involved in suspicious activities or manners.
    • Ensures that unauthorized persons leave the university and community.
    • Enforces university policies, regulations, and municipal, state and federal laws. Assists local law enforcement as necessary.
    • Conducts thorough investigations as assigned and completes detailed reports as to those investigations.
    • Testifies in court as necessary
    • Participates in crime prevention programs.
    • Assists Student Affairs and Residence Life personnel as required.
    • Provides on-campus escorts to university students and personnel as requested.
    • Performs other duties as deemed necessary under the guidance of the Executive Director, via Chain of Command.
    • Responsible for daily electronic timekeeping as it applies to the scope of this position.
    • Regular, punctual attendance as required.

    • Ability to work shift assignments as required by the department, which could include working holidays and weekends.
    • Knowledge of the Penal Code, Vehicle Code, university policies and other laws governing community safety.
    • Ability to conduct crime deterrence and prevention programs.
    • Ability to react calmly and effectively in all situations.
    • Skills in the use of first aid procedures.
    • Skill in building security and lock procedures.
    • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
    • Ability to make judgment calls on sensitive, confidential issues.
    • A thorough knowledge of: Business English and arithmetic; general office methods, procedures and practices.
    • Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate multiple projects.
    • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
    • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
    • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
    • Strong organizational skills and detailed oriented.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
    • Excellent telephone courtesy knowledge and experience.
    • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.

    • Must possess critical thinking and decision making skills
    • Ability to respond to request for routine and emergency medical assistance and render first aid and / or CPR / AED when necessary.
    • Ability to enforce University Policies as well as California Penal and Vehicle codes.
    • Ability to execute powers of arrest as authorized by the Azusa Police Department per a Memorandum of Understanding with the University.

    COMPENSATION

    • Grade 8: $21.44 - $27.87/hour
    • Salary will be commensurate with qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
