    Job Description

    A Research Technician position is available immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Kyle Eagen in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Baylor College of Medicine. The research technician will expand upon a dynamic research program dedicated to understanding the molecular basis of nuclear organization and genome architecture. S/he will be responsible for taking on highly interdisciplinary projects and key functions in this endeavor, including projects focusing on molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, as well as genomics approaches using next-generation DNA sequencing technology. S/he will work side-by-side with Dr. Eagen to develop cutting-edge scientific skills as the lab expands into new research areas.

    The ideal candidate should be highly motivated, well organized, manage time effectively, and have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. S/he will also be required to conduct experimental research lab work and assist in the design of one or more specific phases of entire projects. Previous experience with molecular biology and/or biochemistry is essential for this position.

    GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Follows overall research objectives and protocols to design, set-up, conduct, and troubleshoot experiments
    • Evaluates protocols and data obtained from experiments and recommends changes to processes, procedures and techniques to improve the quality and validity of results based on project objectives
    • May complete mathematical calculations and/or computer analysis to assist in analyzing and judging validity of data

    SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Using a fully functional to advanced level of skill, complete the following activities:
      • Molecular Biology
        • Isolate and purify DNA, RNA, and/or protein
        • PCR and RT-PCR
        • Prepare plasmids
        • Clone, map, and sequence DNA
      • Cellular Biology
        • Cell culture, transfection, and transgene expression
        • CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing
        • Functional studies
    • Administrative
      • Maintain detailed records of research experiments and other laboratory related data including collecting, recording, summarizing, analyzing and interpreting research data
      • Prepare charts and graphs for presentations and publications
      • Search and evaluate scientific literature in support of research projects
      • Track and summarize lab supply expenses and verify accuracy of invoices
      • Order and maintain inventory of laboratory reagents and supplies
      • Write portions of grant applications, manuscripts, and publications
      • Co-authors scientific papers
    • Follow appropriate protocols, policies, procedures, regulations and Good Laboratory Practices
    • Effectively interact with team members to make important contributions on big problems while ensuring a high standard of laboratory organization

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a Bachelor’s degree in Basic Science.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Successful completion of a bachelor’s, master’s, or higher degree in Biology or Chemistry
    • Demonstrated laboratory experience
    • Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions as required by research protocols
    • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies
    • Demonstrated computer skills, including spreadsheets and basic computations
    • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment
    • A record of taking initiative to solve problems and working to high-quality standards
    • Attention to detail and accurate record keeping
    • Ability to multitask, work and learn independently, and be self-motivated
    • Manual dexterity
