Love Kids, Love Adventure, Love Cycling?

Wheel Kids Bicycle Club is seeking camp counselors for summer camps & school-year camps and classes!

Qualified candidates are kid-friendly first, customer-service oriented second, cyclists third. Training provided. Equipment provided as needed. Instructors must be CPR/1st Aid certified; training provided depending on length of commitment.

We call our counselors Coaches – because, like a bicycling team’s coaches, our staff do anything they can to make sure their riders (the kids) have a great time, are kept safe during all of our events, and reach their full potential no matter what program we’re providing.

We’re looking for creative and energetic people who love kids, adventure, and fun; who can lead, mentor and inspire; and who want to expand their own horizons and gain great career experience while working in one of the most exciting and unique day camps in the Bay Area.

The primary responsibility of an Assistant Coach is to support senior staff in providing management, leadership, and childcare support for Wheel Kids participants. The Assistant Coach receives direction from senior staff but also is expected to exhibit independent good judgement and appropriate decision-making in the service of Wheel Kids participants. The Assistant Coach position requires flexibility, creativity and persistence.

The Assistant Coach is expected to perform whatever tasks are needed to ensure safety and a positive experience for participants; adhere to all Wheel Kids rules and policies; and work closely with supervisors and management staff. Assistant Coaches are required to work with all age and skill levels during Wheel Kids programs.

    Primary responsibilities include:

    • Providing management and operational support to the Head Coach of a “team” of up to 15 children.
    • Performing whatever tasks are needed to ensure a safe, enriching, and fun experience for each member of the team.
    • Adhering to and enforcing Wheel Kids safety procedures during programs.
    • Taking initiative and not relying solely on the Head Coach’s instructions for all duties.
    • Temporarily fulfilling the duties of the Head Coach as needed.

Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Directing and/or escorting children and parents/guardians to the clubhouse facility or other staging area for Wheel Kids’ programs.
    • Handling/moving bicycles on stairs, elevators, buses, trucks, etc.
    • Staffing the sign-in and sign-out process; providing excellent customer service to parents/guardians in the process.
    • Participating in bicycle skills learning activities, including “BikeCircuses,” maintenance workshops, vendor/visitor-sponsored events, etc.
    • Supervising and monitoring children during daily activities including group rides, general activities and play time, field trips and special events.
    • Supervising and managing a sub-group of riders and a Volunteer and/or C.I.T. if the team is temporarily subdivided.
    • Engaging children in activities during off-bike time.
    • Monitoring and enforcing discipline and behavior.
    • Displaying a positive attitude, leadership skills, compassion, respect and patience, and being a role model for these attributes.
    • Helping resolve children’s situations: behavioral, medical and emotional.
    • Ensuring that areas used by Wheel Kids are left in excellent condition (“leave no trace”).
    • Establishing an environment that fosters good morale and an enjoyable camp experience for children, families and staff.
  • Qualifications

  • About Us

Wheel Kids Bicycle Club, Inc. is an adventure and exploration destination for kids, using bicycling as a means of promoting confidence, leadership, fitness and environmental and personal awareness. We provide opportunities for school-age children to ride bicycles within several cities of the San Francisco Bay Area and the surrounding region; we teach bicycling skills; we introduce participants to bicycle- and transportation-related professions; and we engage in activities that promote learning about the local urban and natural environment. Through these activities, Wheel Kids helps participating children achieve greater self-confidence and independence, improved physical fitness, improved bicycling skills in a variety of conditions, increased desire to continue bicycling, and daily doses of fun and happiness. There’s no getting around it: riding bikes is fun! It combines independent mobility, highly coordinated gross and fine motor skills, spatial awareness, and instantaneous decision-making and feedback with going fast, being silly and generally goofing off.

Wheel Kids is dedicated to letting kids be kids and doing the things they love to do:

    • Kids love to ride their bikes – we teach them how, we teach them new skills, we ride along side them
    • Kids love to explore and find new things and activities – we guide them to places they’ve never been and to experiences they’ve never had
    • Kids love to learn – we provide opportunities to gain new skills and new interests and encourage hands-on immersion in everything we do
    • Kids love their independence – we give them just enough autonomy to allow them a sense of self-guided accomplishment and self-confidence boosting success.
