    The Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition in the Department of Medicine at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian of Medicine at Boston Medical Center is seeking an outstanding physician leader to join our team as the Inpatient Diabetes Program Director. This multifaceted role includes patient care and trainee education, as well work in creating and maintaining inpatient guidelines and medication safety protocols.

    The Inpatient Diabetes Program Director oversees the 2 inpatient service, consisting of: 1) the teaching service that includes a rotating group of diabetes-focused Endocrinologists (including the Director) who work with an Endocrinology fellow as well as residents and student trainees to provide consultative services to patients hospitalized with hyperglycemia and 2) the NP service that focuses on standardized management protocols as well as diabetes education. The Director also serves as the Chair of the Endocrine Subcommittee of Pharmacy and Therapeutics, a multidisciplinary group responsible for overseeing and disseminating best practice for hospitalized patients with Endocrine conditions via hospital guidelines, modifications to the electronic order set, medication safety review, and staff education. The Director works to assure that standard of care practice is met, and to create and disseminate ongoing initiatives to improve care.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    1. Participate in the rotating group of inpatient consultative physicians
    2. Oversee recommendations for hospital management of inpatient diabetes according to national guidelines
    3. Oversees education and training of Endocrine fellows, residents, and or/students rotating on the Diabetes Service
    4. Oversees the hiring, training and clinical care provided by inpatient diabetes nurse practitioners
    5. Develops and maintains all protocols for inpatient diabetes management based on evidenced-based criteria
    6. Coordinates and manages the consultative attending and nurse practitioner schedules
    7. Serves as the Chair of the Endocrine Subcommittee of Pharmacy
    8. Reviews safety events related to Endocrine medications in the hospital
    9. Oversees ongoing work to improve safety of patients hospitalized with Endocrine conditions

    Required Skills

    Qualifications and Experience:

    The successful candidate must have a MD, DO or MD/PhD degree. Candidates must be board-eligible/certified in Endocrinology and have specific training and experience in inpatient diabetes. Candidates must have, or be eligible for, a full Massachusetts medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board of Massachusetts.

    Key qualifications:

    • Clinical background in diabetes management, with inpatient diabetes experience
    • Completion of Endocrinology fellowship
    • Excellent organizational, teamwork and communication skills

    Salary/Stipend:

    To be determined by the Department of Medicine compensation plan and according to BUMG (Boston University Medical Group) standards/regulations. The Director position includes 0.20 FTE administrative support from BMC.
