    The Research Clinical Veterinarian/Senior Research Clinical Veterinarian role is integral to supporting the mission of Animal Science Center (ASC) at Boston University. The Veterinarian has an essential role in the broader Laboratory Animal Science Center mission but more specifically is a dedicated resource responsible for the coordinated development and operations in support of a vibrant research community dedicated to emerging infectious disease research in the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) at Boston University, which is predominantly carried out at aABSL-2, ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 levels.

     

    Specifically, this position will support NEIDL research for COVID-19, which is supporting an increasing number of federally funded coronavirus projects. These positions within the animal core are vital to ongoing experiments and future research efforts, including disease modeling and testing of therapeutics and vaccines. 

     

    The incumbent at the senior level will be responsible for supervision and management of staff involved in daily care and clinical oversight/support for research animals, disease diagnosis and experimentation in ABSL-2/3/4 research areas at NEIDL. The individual will advise IACUC in ensuring that research activities are in compliance with federal, state and local regulatory policies that are relevant to animal care and welfare. This position reports to the Attending Veterinarian and Director of the Laboratory Animal Science Center (ASC). The individual is expected to provide week-end on-call veterinary clinical coverage to the research animals.

    Required Skills

    • Veterinary degree (DVM/VMD) from an AVMA-accredited school of veterinary medicine or ECFVG (Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates) certification with post-graduate work experience at a ACLAM-recognized laboratory animal medicine training program or equivalent
    • Licensure to practice veterinary medicine within the US
    • Must be ACLAM Diplomate (senior level) or be ACLAM board-eligible
    • Require knowledge and hands-on experience (2+ years) in animal models of infectious diseases at ABSL-3 and/or -4 levels (senior level)
    • Preference will be given to those experienced in animal handling, dosing, sampling and capturing physiological/clinical pathology data measurements and in necropsy of research animals in a bio-containment facility.
    • Lab animal surgical expertise and research study execution skills are highly desirable (senior level)
    • Require multi-tasking and ability to work synergistically with other key stakeholders including EHS, Facilities, ROHP, Security and Investigators etc.,
    • Must meet requirements and qualifications to assume delegated program responsibility in NEIDL
    • Must meet requirements and qualifications for the Personnel Suitability and Reliability Program including DOJ/FBI background checks and SRA clearance in order to handle select agents and work in the biocontainment environment.
    • Must be willing to participate in a medical health surveillance program and be able to wear a protective level A suit
    • Manage duties outside of NEIDL biocontainment as assigned such as weekend duty rotation. Participate in ASC managerial and strategic initiatives as led by ASC Director. Please note, any individual working in the NEIDL facility and granted unescorted access, is subject
    • periodic background reviews, including but not limited to: criminal background, credit history, drug screening, and behavioral evaluations;
    • periodic checks and regular renewals of security credentials, any applicable licenses, and verification of the successful completion of any required training at the facility
    • Search of person, clothing and effects prior to entry into or egress from NEIDL When applicable, individuals will be required to maintain all applicable clearances and licenses and to disclose any changes in circumstances that could compromise access to the facility. Continued employment/ affiliation is contingent upon strict adherence, at all times, to all applicable safety and security rules, procedures, and protocols, as well as required training regimens.

     

    THE NATIONAL EMERGING INFECTIOUS DISEASES LABORATORIES (NEIDL)_ is part of a national network of secure facilities that study infectious diseases – whether they occur naturally or are introduced deliberately through bioterrorism. The NEIDL is dedicated to the development of diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics to combat emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. In addition to Bio Safety Level (BSL)-2 and BSL-3 laboratories, the NEIDL houses BSL-4 laboratories that will operate at the highest level of containment. The NEIDL will add to the growing life sciences industry in the region, throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and across the country._

     

    Individuals seeking affiliation with or employment within the NEIDL may be subject to the following suitability requirements. Failure to meet any of these requirements may result in ineligibility for employment or affiliation:
