  • Responsibilities

    Boston University’s Engineering Product Innovation Center (EPIC) (https://www.bu.edu/epic/), a 15,000 square foot, multimillion-dollar prototyping and maker space located in the heart of BU’s Charles River Campus and serving over 1500 students annually, seeks a new Laboratory Supervisor with a passion for engineering education and a commitment to teaching both undergraduate and graduate students.

    We are looking for a candidate who possesses knowledge and experience in several technical disciplines and can communicate well with students in an engineering course lab setting.

     

    Depending on the skills and strengths of the candidates, specific duties could include:

    • Instructing students in all technical aspects of hardware prototyping, including, but not limited to, basic mfg processes,  milling, tuning, basic CNC
    • Assisting students with design and manufacturing projects
    • Teaching undergraduate laboratory classes.
    • Conducting seminars and programs for students on various aspects of the hardware prototyping and use of the EPIC equipment.
    • Ensuring a safe learning environment.
    • Supervision of the Automated Design and Manufacturing Laboratory in EPIC, a state-of-the-art, lights-out, manufacturing facility.
    • Instructing students on open-source microcontrollers, sensors, basic electronics.

     

    Required Skills

    • 3-5 years of hands-on product design or manufacturing experience.
    • An AA degree in a technical field, with a BS in technical field strongly preferred.
    • Knowledge of basic prototyping and manufacturing methods, including machining, CAD, CAM, and 3D printing.
    • Passion for teaching and working with students and faculty

     

     Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate skills in one or more of the following areas:

     

    • Experience with manufacturing methods such as casting, welding, milling, turning, laser cutting, injection molding, metal forming, finishing, wire EDM.
    • Experience with design and troubleshooting of electronics and sensors.·        
    • Experience in Python 3, HTML, Java-script, and CSS.
    • Familiarity with relay logic and/or programmable logic controllers (PLCs), serial and ethernet/IP communication protocols, and collaborative robotics.
    • Familiarity with teaching lab equipment including wind tunnels, material testing equipment
    • Experience with additive manufacturing
    • Design experience
