The Senior Health and Science Reporter will cover the world-renowned medical, research and biotech communities of Boston and Cambridge, and the surrounding areas. Reporting includes groundbreaking biomedical research and breakthroughs, new and emerging health trends, personal health, hospitals and state health policy. The reporter should have a passion for multimedia storytelling and a demonstrated ability to report from the perspective of patients and their families, researchers and medical providers. The position requires that you establish yourself as one of the area's most authoritative voices on these issues, with a strong local profile and a national reach through NPR and the wider public broadcasting system. Candidates should have subject-matter expertise and a solid journalistic track record befitting WBUR's reputation as a trusted local news source. The reporter should have a demonstrated ability to cultivate sources, identify important trends in health care and collect and verify information through a variety of channels. Candidates should be conversant with social media and a variety of multimedia tools. The reporter will be responsible for the team's newsletter, developing a unique voice and relationship with readers through the newsletter. The strongest candidates also will have proven experience building audience, establishing a social media brand and stoking community engagement.

Essential Functions:

• Reports and produces several broadcast feature stories, web posts and/or newscast spots each month on biomedical research, health and health care including but not limited to: writing, researching, gathering material. Independently judges news stories for appropriateness and publication. Breaks news. Completely executes multimedia stories for digital publication and radio.
• Writes about the latest health and science news for the weekly CommonHealth newsletter and curates related materials from elsewhere online in an informal, conversational style that also comports with WBUR's on-air voice
• Consistently and enthusiastically engages with readers and the WBUR community on social media, comment threads and community venues such as public forums and events. Curates the CommonHealth landing page and manages the CommonHealth social media accounts
• Develops and pitches ideas for stories, initiatives and projects related to health and science coverage. Provides ongoing insight and counsel to other WBUR reporters, shows and departments about  health care coverage
• Stays abreast of the latest developments in health and biomedical research, develops sources and tracks trends in the region.

Required Skills

• Bachelor's degree or relevant experience required.
• Minimum five years journalism experience required.
