  • Responsibilities

    Events & Conferences is a division of Auxiliary Services responsible for the coordination of University-wide events; room scheduling of University events; management of the summer conference operations; management of a premier, campus arts venue, the Tsai Performance Center; and the coordination of non-University conferences and events throughout the year. Our mission is to support the academic enterprise of a vibrant research institution by providing comprehensive service and event planning resources at an exceptional value to campus departments and external clients. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Auxiliary Services, the General Manager is the executive responsible for the strategic and day-to-day operation of all aspects of Events & Conferences. Provide the vision and leadership to plan and direct high quality events and conferences with specific emphasis on balancing the priorities of supporting University institutional events and adding new business to the current portfolio. The General Manager also provides high-level leadership and direction to the staff responsible for the Tsai Performance Center.

     

    Responsibilities include:

    • Determine fiscal and budgetary requirements and monitor expenditures of budgeted funds.
    • Develop business plans, identify gaps, and ensure proactive efforts to fill capacity and meet budget targets.
    • Provide leadership, strategic direction, policies, and plans for the Events & Conferences organization.
    • Lead the development of a comprehensive multi-year marketing and lead generation effort designed to increase conference and events visibility on a local and regional level and attract external clientele to create incremental revenue opportunities.
    • Strong project management skills to manage a number of competing projects and their teams at one time and prioritize the projects and the teams within an established planning schedule to ensure that each event and/or conference is brought in on time and to budget.
    • Establish and maintain rapport with University departments who provide services for the Events & Conferences programs and facilities.
    • Develop and expand vendor relationships and contacts, seek ways to streamline, and potentially outsource logistics and planning while focusing on innovative cost-saving solutions.
    • Responsible for ensuring excellent customer service while optimizing revenue.
    • Establish and maintain rapport with both internal and external clients to ensure that all department obligations to them are met, and that their event experiences at Boston University are of the highest caliber.
    • Responsible for creating and managing a multi-year capital plan for the development and upkeep of numerous event venues across campus that fall under the oversight of Events and Conferences. Included within this portfolio is working collaboratively with various campus partners to support the George Sherman Center, a central location for events and conferences, dining and retail, Dean of Students, and University academic offices.

    Required Skills

    • Bachelors degree; Masters preferred.
    • Over 8 years of direct experience, with over five years of program and staff management in the events and conferences industry, preferably within higher education.
    • Experience managing a large, diverse team of professionals performing in a fast paced, deadline driven environment with ability to motivate, grow, and retain high performers.
    • Knowledge and implementation of best practices in data analytics utilizing current industry trends.
    • Experience collaborating, developing partnerships, and building capacity with communities.
    • A track record of creative and successful problem-solving. Outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills, with an ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
