The DEPARTMENT OF EARTH AND ENVIRONMENT Boston University’s College of Arts & Sciences invites applications for a salaried, full-time teaching position at the rank of Lecturer with a secondary teaching responsibility in the CAS Core Natural Sciences Curriculum, with a start date of July 1, 2023. This is a full-time teaching faculty position and is a non-tenure track appointment. 

The Department of Earth and Environment has teaching and research foci in Earth System Science, Human-Environment Interactions, and Remote Sensing and Geospatial Science. Its unifying mission is to understand a changing Earth and its relationships with humankind and to develop strategies for a sustainable future. In the Department of Earth and Environment, duties will include teaching an upper-level undergraduate course in structural geology, an introductory course in natural disasters from a geological perspective (earthquakes, floods, droughts), and, in alternating years, a course in geochronology and in introductory earth sciences.

The CAS Core Curriculum offers an integrated curriculum that includes courses in the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities. As a learning community, Core Curriculum believes that the cultural and social diversity of its faculty, staff, and students is vitally important to its distinction and excellence. Successful applicants will demonstrate a broad knowledge of the natural sciences as well as an interest in developing inclusive pedagogies that encourage students from all disciplines to engage with the sciences. In Core, duties include working collaboratively with other faculty on one interdisciplinary team-taught course each fall, working with the senior laboratory coordinator, leading weekly discussion and laboratory sections, delivering lectures on your area of specialty, and helping to work collectively on new curricula. The interdisciplinary course is aimed at the first and second-year level for non-science majors and it explores how the fields of astronomy, earth science, biology, and anthropology can be used to understand the origins of the cosmos and life.  

The initial appointment is for two years, with possibility of renewal.

Required Skills

A PhD in Earth Sciences, Geology, Geosciences, or a related field is preferred. We seek applicants with experience teaching at the college level, established teaching skills, ability to work well in a collaborative environment, and a strong interest in teaching within a general education curriculum. This is a nine-month faculty position with salary payments spread over twelve months. We also provide support for conferences that encourage pedagogical development.
