  • Responsibilities

    The International Elective Programs allows fourth-year DMD students to travel to international dental schools for two to three weeks and, correspondingly, for dental students from the international schools to visit GSDM. The program gives students an opportunity to experience a large variety of clinical experiences, while also being immersed in different cultures. GSDM is in partnership with several international dental schools in China, England, Japan and Thailand. The International Elective Externships allow fourth-year students the opportunity to travel to low resource countries as a member of a dental team and provide preventive and restorative dental care.

    The Assistant Director is responsible for planning and directing the day-to-day operations of the International Programs at the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. This includes promoting a supportive environment for GSDM faculty and student international travelers/visitors, and encourage students, faculty and alumni to enrich their time at the School and the University by engaging in local and international activities. The Assistant Director will address student concerns, guide both GSDM and visiting students and faculty in planning for and debriefing from international experiences, critically evaluate feedback and develop recommendations for improvement from the data. In addition, the Assistant Director is responsible for finding new educational opportunities for the exchange program, funding sources to support the expanding exchange program, develop and implement new policies and procedural guidelines including making policy changes and recommending exceptions to policies, and continue to initiate and foster relationships across GSDM and within the international partner dental schools and non-governmental organizations.

    This position will also supervise one student worker.

    Required Skills

    Bachelor’s Degree and 1-3 years of work experience required.

    Competencies/skills include: coordinating/managing a program plan including managing deadlines, working with diverse population groups preferably in developing countries, and experience working with non-governmental organizations.

    Strong communication skills both written and verbal.

    Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as reach out to other members of the Office of Global and Population Health, and departments of the dental school and university. Must have strong time management and organizational skills.
