  • Responsibilities

     

    The Animal Science Center is part of the Office of Research, a group dedicated to aiding the research community in navigating the lifecycle of their work, from finding funding to creating proposals to helping inventions find their way to the public.

     

    The incumbent is responsible for providing consistent and high quality care for all laboratory animals at Boston University facilities on both the Medical campus & Charles River Campus in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act, the “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals”, NIH policies, guidelines and all other applicable regulations and policies.

     

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    • Provide basic animal health & welfare inspection of common laboratory species including rodents, nonhuman primates and other USDA regulated species for all Boston University animal housing facilities (both Medical campus & Charles River campus). Perform clinical observations, identify health issues, administer therapeutic treatments (topical, oral, intravenous, subcutaneous, and intraperitoneal), provide nail/teeth trims among other veterinary tasks.  Perform medicinal calculations & preparations.

    • Communicate with research staff and other appropriate persons on health & welfare of research animals, therapeutic actions and/or research support.

    • Assist in rodent health surveillance program, laboratory diagnostics, environmental enrichment programs, and behavioral assessments.

    • Perform basic Special Services in support of research staff.

    • Assist with receiving, sorting, distributing of supplies and equipment.

     

    This position is eligible for the generous tuition remission at Boston University.

    Required Skills

     

    High School diploma or GED required; Associates Degree preferred.  Minimum of 1 year of direct experience within laboratory animal care or clinical veterinary animal care preferred.

     

    Bachelor's degree required in lieu of experience.

     

    Other requirements include:

     

    1. Walking and Standing: 2-4 hours at one time & 6-8 hours per day
    2. Bending and Twisting Neck: 2-4 hours at one time & 6-8 hours per day
    3. Bending and Twisting Back: 2-4 hours at one time & 6-8 hours per day
    4. Squatting: < than .5 hour at a time & < than 1 hour per day
    5. Kneeling: < than .5 hour at a time & < than 1 hour per day
