VETERINARY TECHNICIAN II, BUMC Lab Animal Science Center
The Animal Science Center is part of the Office of Research, a group dedicated to aiding the research community in navigating the lifecycle of their work, from finding funding to creating proposals to helping inventions find their way to the public.
The incumbent is responsible for providing consistent and high-quality care for all laboratory animals at Boston University facilities on both the Medical Campus & Charles River Campus in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act, the “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals”, NIH policies, guidelines and all other applicable regulations and policies.
Primary Responsibilities:
Provide basic animal health & welfare inspection of common laboratory species including rodents, nonhuman primates and other USDA regulated species for all Boston University animal housing facilities (both medical campus & Charles River campus). Perform clinical observations, identify health issues, administer therapeutic treatments (topical, oral, intravenous, subcutaneous, and intraperitoneal), provide nail/teeth trims among other veterinary tasks. Perform medicinal calculations & preparations.
Required Skills
HS Diploma/GED required, Associate's or Bachelor's degree in relevant field is strongly preferred. 1-3 years for the Tech I level, with at least 3 years of experience in a laboratory animal care or clinical veterinary care setting for the Tech II level. Certified Veterinary Technician degree preferred.
Grade 45 for Tech I
Grade 46 for Tech II
Other requirements include:
Walking and Standing: 2-4 hours at one time & 6-8 hours per day
Bending and Twisting Neck: 2-4 hours at one time & 6-8 hours per day
Bending and Twisting Back: 2-4 hours at one time & 6-8 hours per day
Squatting: < than .5 hour at a time & < than 1 hour per day
Kneeling: < than .5 hour at a time & < than 1 hour per day
