  • Responsibilities

    This position is part of the Division of Radiation Safety and Medical Physics Team which ensures a safe radiological environment that is compliant with all policies, standards, regulations and laws. The Senior Specialist, Radiation Safety works under the Direction of the Director of Medical Physics and Radiation Safety and is responsible for radiological safety on both campuses and hospital while remaining flexible in assignments across all areas and departments served by EHS. The position is expected to regularly exercise discretion utilizing advanced technical knowledge and skills in the area of radiation safety and handle complex, technically difficult hazard assessments, identifications and resolution determinations.

    Required Skills

    Professional Certification NRRPT, CLSO, MLSO, CNMT, and RT will be considered Knowledge of radiation regulations and programs. 1-3 years (for specialist level), 3+ years (senior specialist level) work experience in clinical, academic or industrial settings. Excellent technical written, verbal communication, and analytical skills.Must be able to walk for prolonged periods of time and be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must have working knowledge of computer packages including Microsoft Office. Work in areas wearing personal protective equipment such as a Tyvek suit and gloves to decontaminate equipment and areas such as radioiodine therapy rooms in the hospital. Daily inspections in laboratories could result in exposure to chemicals, radiation and biohazard materials. Must be able to respond to emergencies on campus during off hours, including weekends and holidays as part of the on-call emergency response team. Should have or be able to obtain the 40-hour OSHA hazardous waste operations and emergency response training. This position requires completion of a pre-placement physical questionnaire and on-site physical and medical surveillance upon hire. Employment is contingent on initial and continued successful background checks as determined by Boston University and applicable external agencies and meeting all applicable elements of Research Occupational Health Programs and Personnel Suitability & Reliability Program (includes initial and random drug screening) throughout the period of employment. 

     

    THE NATIONAL EMERGING INFECTIOUS DISEASES LABORATORIES (NEIDL)_ is part of a national network of secure facilities that study infectious diseases – whether they occur naturally or are introduced deliberately through bioterrorism. The NEIDL is dedicated to the development of diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics to combat emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. In addition to Bio Safety Level (BSL)-2 and BSL-3 laboratories, the NEIDL houses BSL-4 laboratories that will operate at the highest level of containment. The NEIDL will add to the growing life sciences industry in the region, throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and across the country._

     

    Individuals seeking affiliation with or employment within the NEIDL may be subject to the following suitability requirements. Failure to meet any of these requirements may result in ineligibility for employment or affiliation:

     

    • CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK: To be completed in accordance with BU Public Safety guidelines and all federal, state and local laws and regulations.

    • periodic checks and regular renewals of security credentials, any applicable licenses, and verification of the successful completion of any required training at the facility
    • Search of person, clothing and effects prior to entry into or egress from NEIDL

     

    When applicable, individuals will be required to maintain all applicable clearances and licenses and to disclose any changes in circumstances that could compromise access to the facility.
