    The Boston University Libraries are seeking a Web & User Experience Librarian to ensure a user-centered web presence and deliver on the continuous improvement of our websites. This role will be instrumental in the Libraries' website redesign process and ongoing relevancy of our sites, with a focus on content strategy and site architecture, all in service of providing a usable, accessible, and welcoming web presence. Working closely with colleagues in Library Technology & Discovery Services and Access Services & Library Experience, this position will structure and lead user experience activities for our websites and core library systems to evaluate and respond to our user needs. In collaboration with the Library Communications Manager and content creators across all library units, this position will organize content strategy and publishing guidelines to produce current, relevant, and usable information for our diverse patron community.

    Responsibilities

    • Manage libraries web presence: Ensure an effective web presence for the Libraries through content management and utilization of appropriate web platforms in use across the BU Libraries system, including and especially for information services delivered over the WordPress and SpringShare publishing platforms. Provide resources, support, and training to library colleagues, including liaisons, subject specialists, managers, and administrative coordinators, in the usage of these platforms to deliver research and learning support information to target audiences. Augment Libraries’ communication and outreach efforts through development of capacity and workflows for highlighting collections, people, and spaces to library user communities.
    • User experience research activities: Construct, lead, and report on Libraries’ user experience research efforts aimed at the continuous improvement of websites and systems. Guide implementation of solutions. Connect research efforts with the Access Services & Library Experience for integration of web and in-person services. Incorporate and support student contributions to user research and design efforts.
    • Content strategy: Provide frameworks and collaborate with stakeholders on content strategy for information, help, services, and guide publishing. Establish schedules and guidelines for content review processes. Develop and maintain style guides.
    • Overall website strategy and partnerships: Contribute to the overall strategy and design of the Libraries’ web presence in collaboration with colleagues in the Libraries, marketing & communications, and IS&T. Develop and leverage relationships with partners across campus.
    • Professional development and networking: Develop and follow through on personalized professional development plans. Network and represent the Libraries in local and national communities for the web, UX, and accessibility.

    Required Skills

    • Master’s degree in information science, information technology, web design, HCI, or similar and related field
    • 2-3 years of experience working in related role or field (web, user experience, marketing, or communications role)
    • Ability to prepare effective web content to reach diverse audiences.
    • Working familiarity with standard web publishing technologies and standards (e.g., HTML and CSS).
    • Understanding of website information architecture.
    • Ability to analyze organizational web publishing workflows systematically and work across groups to ensure consistent, effective content to target audiences.
    • Ability to obtain, assess, and prioritize user needs based upon research activities, analytics, and input from colleagues.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience working with higher education or academic libraries.
    • Familiarity with content management systems including WordPress and/or SpringShare CMS.
    • Experience creating or managing creation of graphic, multimedia, and tutorial content.
    • Understanding of web accessibility standards and requirements.
    • Willingness to foster student contributions to web publishing and user experience efforts.
    • Awareness of best practices in web publishing, content strategy, and user experience in a higher education environment.
    • Experience in developing, refining, employing, and improving website information architecture in a complex organizational environment.
