  • Responsibilities

    Reporting to the Director of Graduate Affairs, the Assistant Director of Graduate Affairs and Student Support is responsible for providing holistic personal, social, and professional development support for all graduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences. The position is charged with assessing, creating, and implementing efforts toward optimizing student potential for success and wellness in graduate programs through providing programming and services to meet the personal, social, and professional development needs of our masters and PhD students. Attention to diplomacy and detail are essential as this position creates and maintains relationships with various offices throughout Boston University and the surrounding community that bolster student success. The Assistant Director of Graduate Affairs and Student Support will also work closely with the Director of Graduate Affairs on large scale events such as orientation and commencement, as well as award, fellowship, and internship promotion and other student opportunities.

     

    Responsibilities:

    • Primary point of contact for students needing assistance with BU services offered for health, safety, wellbeing.
    • Serve as a valued and trusted staff member to students, staff, and faculty regarding student success and wellbeing outside of their academic departments.
    • Identify and provide support structures focused on student support services for underrepresented groups, international students, and services that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
    • Collaborate with student groups such as Graduate Student Organization (GSO) and Graduate Women in Science and Engineering (GWISE) to plan and execute co-sponsored events.
    • Assess needs of students and recommend support initiatives in areas of need. -Develop and implement programming to support students needs for wellness, safety, and belonging.
    • Cultivate community within GRS through liaising with other BU offices to provide students with cross-disciplinary collaboration opportunities and non-departmental social gatherings.
    • Oversee student services events such as orientation, community gatherings, and graduation, as well as student health and wellness checks.

    Required Skills

    • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
    • 5-8 years of experience working in student services or affairs, or another related field in higher education
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to identify students' needs for support services to make appropriate referrals
