    Now, our GLOBAL LEADERSHIP team is looking for an INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT GIFT OFFICER who will use creative and sophisticated identification, cultivation, and solicitation methods for solicitation of gifts of $100K and above from individuals, foundations, friends, and corporations, with a focus on the discovery of new high-net-worth international prospects.

     

     

    GLOBAL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AT BOSTON UNIVERSITY

    The Global Leadership Development (GLD) team works with the Senior Vice President on securing major, leadership and principal level gifts for Boston University from our global philanthropists, partnering closely with University leadership. Their work centers on identifying prospects through discovery and in partnership with our research team to develop tactical strategies to engage them. These prospect engagement plans require collaboration with our development teams at our seventeen schools and colleges, and often involve mapping out high- level cultivation and solicitation of high-net-worth individuals, leading to philanthropic investments that create impactful and meaningful change.

     

     

    INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT GIFT OFFICER

    Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, International Giving, the International Development Gift Officer (IDGO), will need to travel opportunistically under guidance from AVP-International, to discover and engage donors for the University’s upcoming campaign. The individual is knowledgeable on the nuances of international fundraising and able to build individual donor relationships for themself, the president, provost, and deans, and develop an annual operating plan and a three-year strategy for international donor discovery and engagement.  The IDGO actively supports and plans development travel of the university president and deans when opportunity arises, campus visits for donor cultivation and international high-profile meetings and events hosted by university and international alumni leadership, for example the International Advisory Board, presidential luncheons and “Evening with the Dean” series. The International Gift Officer collaborates extensively with other Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) stakeholders including those in Major Gifts, School Development, Special Initiatives, and Alumni Engagement.  The IDGO works closely with International Alumni Relations, and both guides and supports, international alumni relations strategy, plans developed by existing international leadership councils as well as help build new leadership councils, where feasible. 

     

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    DISCOVERY, CULTIVATION AND SOLICITATION:

    • Manage, cultivate, and solicit a portfolio of major and principal gift international prospects ($100K and above), involving significant travel internationally to targeted regions identified by Assistant Vice President, International Giving that is built around a collaborative alumni engagement and development strategy. Demonstrate experience in soliciting and closing seven-figure-gifts. And partner with team members to identify key areas of success.
    • Facilitate cultivation of top prospects and stewardship of top donors assigned to the individual as well as focus on discovery of new prospects. Develop a robust strategy for prospect discovery and alumni engagement. The development work will concentrate in parts of Asia (Korea, Japan, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore) and Latin America, the individual will work closely with AVP, International to travel to other continents as opportunity arises. Targeted goal of 12 visits a month and annual dollar goal as determined by the Assistant Vice President, International Giving. The individual works closely with the international giving team members, Senior Vice President for DAR, president, provost, and colleagues in schools across campus on prospect identification strategy, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.

     

     

    COLLABORATION AND KNOWLEDGE ACQUISITION:

    • Collaborate with DAR colleagues, especially those overseeing School and College Development, Foundation Relations, Special Initiatives to build content-driven cultivation and solicitation strategies that respond to prospects’ interests and passions and connect them with academic leaders including School and College deans and center directors. Meet regularly with internal stakeholders to drive prospect strategy.
    • Actively maintains a current body of knowledge about Boston University’s development priorities and international giving vehicles and protocols; develops a thorough understanding of the programs and aspirations of each of Boston University’s schools, colleges, centers, special initiatives, and the other large units where major and principal gift fundraising is needed.
    • Partner with members of the Global Leadership Development team to support strategy and recruit new members for the president’s international advisory board meeting, evening with the dean and presidential luncheon gatherings that enable principal gift prospect engagement for self and leadership. Support and enhance ongoing international parents’ engagement strategy to increase parents giving at major and principal gift level. 
    • Coordinate closely with Alumni Engagement, international team to participate in planning agendas for meetings for international alumni councils, help identify new members for the councils as well as future members, assist to identify hosts for parents’ events, prospective student receptions, and develop robust annual operating plan with their team for alumni engagement both online and in person.

     

    RESEARCH, COMMUNICATIONS AND STRATEGY:

    • Partner with the Research and Prospect Information Strategies team, use proactive and creative identification techniques to uncover and connect with new major and principal gift prospects for the University across the globe.
    • Develop creative communications methods to strengthen alumni engagement and cultivation with DAR’s communication team to include tactical outreach to rated prospects and develop content pipeline for international e-newsletter published by Alumni Engagement team. Communication strategy should include a digital engagement strategy knowing that the pandemic enabled a virtual platform to engage our donors.
    • Submit detailed trip reports, develop robust follow-up post trips, update prospect engagement, interactions, and strategy in the shared network.
    • Develop annual operating plan to include alumni discovery, travel, outreach, engagement, event planning as well as ongoing virtual engagement strategy. Plan should include online and in-person engagement for prospects assigned to the individual’s portfolio. Frequently, assess global conditions and refresh the operating plan, accordingly, based on changing travel restrictions.

    • 8+ years of fundraising and alumni engagement experience with knowledge of international fundraising approaches.
    • Proficiency in a foreign language preferred.

    • Proven track record of discovery, building and developing alumni engagement both for domestic and international prospects.
    • Experience staffing executive and academic leadership.
    • Experience in enlisting and interacting with senior-level leadership volunteers.
    • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills
    • Superb judgment and the sensibility to adjudicate wisely among competing priorities
    • A disposition to listen and circulate widely.
    • Outstanding interpersonal skills.
    • Exceptional reasoning, problem-solving and analytical skills, including an ability to translate ideas and concepts into clear, actionable steps.
    • Superb organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.
    • Ability to work independently as well collaboratively with team members.
    • Energy and stamina, self-confidence and humility, a strong sense of purpose, a tolerance for ambiguity and a sense of humor.
    • Extensive travel, nights and weekends required.
