    The spectrUM Discovery Area invites applications for a Museum Program Coordinator II (Program Coordinator II) to oversee day-to-day operations of the museum and in-museum programs. This position will work under the direction of spectrUM’s Associate Director of Education and will also serve as the lead educator while working with support educators. The Museum Program Coordinator II will work during open hours of the museum and serve as the shift manager in the absence of another shift manager. They will train staff educators to work at exhibits and to lead activities at the Discovery Bench. The Museum Program Coordinator II will create the staff schedule and daily activities schedule for the open hours of the museum, as well as support coordinating staffing for birthday parties, field trips and special in-museum events including museum rentals and special events and will supervise educators during these programs.

    The Museum Program Coordinator II will assist the Associate Director of Education to ensure all spectrUM supplies are purchased. They will stock spectrUM’s storage spaces, coordinate regular cleanings, create systems to keep the storage organized and communicate with staff members to generate a supply list for purchasing. All purchasing, staffing and maintenance models generated by the Museum Coordinator will adhere to spectrUM’s outlined budgets and strategic plan, with cost savings encouraged on all lines that this employee will be responsible for. This position will require the employee to work closely with spectrUM’s mission while adhering to sustainable fiscal models for materials and staffing.

    The person in this position will serve as a liaison with spectrUM’s partners in our location at the Missoula Public library – including Families First Children’s Museum, the UM Living Lab Missoula Community Access Television and the Missoula Public Library’s Children’s Department. The Museum Program Coordinator II will also collaborate with these partners to plan for monthly themes, weekly activities and special events. The person in this position will also support the Associate Director of Education as a liaison at EmPower Place, spectrUM’s free learning center at the Missoula Food Bank and Community Center and will collaborate with our EmPower Place partners to plan events and operate the center, including the oversite of all spectrUM educators in that space.

    The Museum Program Coordinator II will collaborate with spectrUM’s Associate Directors and other spectrUM project leads to create and implement a social media plan that promotes spectrUM’s engagement at the museum as well as at EmPower Place, in the Bitterroot, on the Flathead Reservation and at other mobile sites.

    This position will help fill spectrUM’s various grant requirements, including future grants, such as those funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the National Science Foundation and the UM research partners, to incorporate project aims in our museum. Current grants include “Making Across Montana” and “Transforming Spaces” funded by IMLS and NFS EPSCoR, The Museum Program Coordinator II will support the Associate Director to prototype exhibits at spectrUM’s locations and seek input from our education team and the visiting public to share with the project team.

    This position will help enhance spectrUM’s culture by working respectfully with fellow staff throughout the organization and supporting educator’s and volunteers. The Museum Program Coordinator II will oversee the museum educators and will hold regular performance reviews for student employees. This person will be responsible for scheduling student educators, training student educators on outreach activities and disseminating spectrUM’s science and education pedagogy.

    This position requires incumbent to develop a working knowledge of university systems and compliance with spectrUM and university policies. This employee will also develop the ability to present science process and accurate content in an engaging way with diverse populations of learners. The incumbent will develop knowledge of educational best practices and the ability to implement best practices in a variety of educational settings.

    Required Skills:

    • Demonstrated experience in managing daily operations of educational programs
    • Demonstrated experience with project coordination, and scheduling
    • Previous experience in organizing and stocking a storage warehouse
    • Previous experience in management and supervision, ability to delegate required

    Minimum Required Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit administration and at least two (2) years’ experience in a formal and informal learning environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience

    • Experience developing educational exhibits and/or educational media
    • Experience working on collaborative projects with many partners
    • Experience overseeing educational programs and staff
    • Experience leading science museum programs

    Salary: $18.585/hr.
