    Assistant Director for Inclusion & Community, University Center

    The University of Montana invites applications for an Assistant Director for Inclusion & Community for the University Center. The Assistant Director for Inclusion & Community will support, empower, and engage students and will implement programming that creates and sustains an inclusive and supportive campus climate for all students at the University of Montana. In addition to supporting the programs and initiatives of the Branch Center, the assistant director will support and guide student groups and organizations in the Branch Center as well as other identity and advocacy-based student groups.

    This position is a student-centered leader who models inclusion, community, and belonging as fundamental to fulfilling the university mission toward inclusive prosperity. This individual will be an expert resource for University of Montana students as we work to foster an inclusive and welcoming UM community. This position embodies UM’s commitment to placing all students’ success at the center of everything we do.

    In addition to providing daily support and advocacy to students and student groups, this individual is responsible for the growth and activation of the Branch Center itself, as a space for all students and student groups to use, build community, and strengthen as a central space for inclusion and belonging on campus.

    This role serves as a liaison for and between student groups with a focus on building community. The role is committed to problem solving and conflict resolution, and requires considerable interpersonal skill to mediate connections among those with differing viewpoints, goals and priorities. Daily interactions with members of the campus community or the general public could range from being moderately structured to unstructured drop-ins with purposes including to influence or motivate others, to obtain information, or to navigate situations and provide resources and referral information.

    Reporting to the University Center Associate Director for Student Life, the individual in this position operates under general supervision expressed in terms of program goals and objectives, priorities, and deadlines. In communication and consultation as needed, the Assistant Director will provide interpretation and establish methods to perform overall program or project objectives and management of available resources.

    The Assistant Director for Inclusion and Community hires, onboards, trains, and supervises professional staff member(s), graduate assistant(s), and student employees with substantial independence and decision-making authority regarding performance, pay, and employment relationship matters.

    Responsibilities:

    • Enhances the student experience, with emphasis on underrepresented and historically marginalized or minoritized groups, by advising and assisting student organizations in developing sustainable cross-cultural and intersectional activities, and on-going programs and initiatives
    • Promotes the Branch Center as a central space on campus for inclusion and belonging, and conducts outreach to student organizations about available resources and opportunities for collaboration
    • Encourages increased historical and cultural awareness of students, faculty, staff, and the local community by initiating, planning, and coordinating annual events and programs
    • Plans and organizes assigned heritage and history month programs, including cultural entertainment and educational programs open to campus and community members
    • Develops and facilitates equity and justice oriented educational programs for students
    • Work with campus partners to contribute to a vibrant first year experience
    • In collaboration with University Center Marketing, manage the marketing activities for Branch Center programs and events, including social media, graphic design, and website
    • Oversees the budget for the Branch Center programming unit and allocates funds for programs and initiatives
    • Collects and compiles assessment and program evaluation on multicultural activities and programs to ensure learning outcomes are met, consistency in practices, inclusiveness in planning, and equity in services
    • In coordination with UC staff, enhances the multicultural and intersectional experience and opportunities of students by managing the physical space of the Branch Center
    • Establishes the viability of the Branch Center and its programs by effectively supervising staff, advising student groups housed in the Branch Center, and serving as an advocate on behalf of students
    • Develops and maintain effective working relationships with community support organizations and leaders from underrepresented communities by networking and developing new relationships
    • Makes recommendations on policies and procedures to increase inclusion on campus
    • Contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds and maintains an ongoing working knowledge of the meaning of the terms in the LGBTQ community and other historically marginalized or minoritized groups
    • Remains competent and current though self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required by supervisor
    • Provides an active and visible presence on campus, particularly in support of LGBTQ and BIPOC students and student groups whose focus is on identity, inclusion, and belonging; will require evening and weekend time commitments, but a flexible work schedule will be determined with the Supervisor to accommodate a healthy life-work balance
    • Supports the overall success of the Branch Center and multicultural and intersectional programs by performing all other duties as assigned

    Position Details

    • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
    • Salary for this position is $52,000 to $55,000 per year commensurate with qualifications.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree
    • Demonstrated experience with student leadership programming, organizational development, initiating, event planning, executing, and assessing student programs and services, and measuring student outcomes
    • Demonstrated interpersonal skills working with students and student groups on sensitive matters and those involving conflict
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively advocate for students while maintaining a collaborative and supportive relationship with colleagues and the institution
    • Demonstrated administrative skills (Budget oversight, following policies and protocols etc.)
    • Expertise in and an appreciation for evidence-based and research-informed theory and best practices regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion, and strategies for removing barriers to inclusive learning environments
    • Demonstrated ability to build a network of partners and supporters
    • Team-oriented and open to ideas and input from colleagues; ability to develop and maintain productive, collegial working relationships with faculty, administrators, staff, students, and alums
    • A sense of informed empathy and superb listening skills
    • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects/tasks with thorough attention to detail; ability to set and attain goals while working both collaboratively and independently on various projects
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills; and strong presentation skills; with the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of internal and external stakeholders
    • The ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise independent judgement

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in Public Administration, Organizational Leadership, Students Affairs, College Student Personnel Administration, or a related field
    • Experience working effectively with students, staff, faculty, and senior administration within a higher education setting to advance institutional commitment to and inclusion and belonging related to, undergraduate retention, academic support services, faculty and staff diversity, and campus climate issues
    • Experience providing diversity, identity, or inclusivity training(s)
    • Demonstrated ability to gather, track and analyze data to inform decision-making and continuous improvement
    • Demonstrated ability to create innovative training materials to engage students and the broader UM community in the process of creating a more diverse and inclusive campus
